OUTHWAITE ' 71, '61 and maybe '51 ???
« on: Tuesday 16 October 07 19:22 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to help an elderly relative find out more about her ancestry. One of her ancestors is a William Outhwaite. According to the 1881 census he was born C 1851 at Newcastle on Tyne - although I can't located him through the usual sources of LDS and Free BMD.

I am wondering if he is in the 1871, 1861 (and maybe the '51 census) with other family members.

He married at Marylebone London so I'm not entirely sure he stayed in Northumberland during his childhood.....

much thanks,
ard

Hmmm - interesting. There is definately something there - Outhwaite can't be that common a name but then William is.  The year fits - and there is mention   of Newcastle on Tyne .... I will certainly keep it in mind; it is something to work with, anyway.

Thank you  :)

There is a William Outhwaite, born 2q 1850, Kensington 3 (possibly) 3?4 (last number only semi-legible).
The family were living in Paddington in 1851 and this lay within the Kensington Registration District.
However, if this is him, where was he in 1851?

Harriet Owthwaite, a widow, is still in Paddington in 1871 but William is not there.

Thank - you  for looking into this- good question about the William birth - [I don't know these areas much so these tips help.]  I found no death recorded around that time on Free BMD for William so perhaps where would he be, indeed, at the time of the census. He might be with a relative and misrecorded or mistranscribed though he would have been very young...

It is a name that could be subject to mispelling!

Knowing that Harriet was a widow in 1871, this is the likely death record for John

Deaths Mar Q 1862
OUTHWAITE  John     Kensington  1a 46

I wonder where William was in 1871, as well! He married Elizabeth Gibbs in 1873 and they had at least one son, William Alfred.

thanks again  :D
