My g/father was born inMerthyr about 1855. Married  Jennet Williams 1880
 Does any one have any info. prior to 1880 please.  1880 cencus has them living in 1 Balca

here is a possible same sort of occ. as in 1881 census.

james lewis age 16. b. merthyr. occ. collier in coalmine. son.
mary lewis age 12. b. merthyr. daughter.
william lewis age 2. b. merthyr. lodgers son.
hannah lewis age 1. b. merthyr. lodgers daughter.
living at (looks like)penyard plymoth,merthyr.
reg.dist. merthyr tydfil.

if you do not have the marriage index here it is
name. james lewis.
y.o.r. 1880.
qtr. apr/may/jun.
dist. merthyr tydfil.
county. breconshire,glamorgan,mid.glamorgan.
vol. 11a.
page. 623.
also on the same page jennet williams.

if you do not have the marr. cert. it might be an idea to get it you could then find out who his parents were with a bit of luck.
if you already know his parents names do they tally with the 1871 census.

  Thanks,  it does seem to tie up with the 1861 and 1871 census's.
  The problem is the ages given, in 1861 William is 38 and Margaret is51.
  In 1871 William is now 70 and Margaret is 57. (?)
 I have copy of James and Jennet's marraige certificate but both fathers are recorded as deceased.

if you find there is a connection to your LEWIS family with Cooms,Coombes,Coombs families in Merthyr Tydfil let me know.
I have Ann Lewis born 1823 born unknown who married George Coombes.
They were connected to the family of Lewis LEWIS on the 1841 census.
whos relatives were also Rosser LEWIS on the 1861 census

My LEWIS family connections around 1851 are tied to Penydarren ,PenHeol ,Penydarren yard area between 1841 and 1881 census.

i see you have obtained the Marriage Certificate .
 
As you now have their both fathers listed their occupations and also their ages etc

if you list the info it may help others search for you.

  On the marriage cert. it gives
      James Lewis  24 yrs -coal haulier
   father- William Lewis (deceased)-  pit hitcher
                                                                                                          Jennet Williams 21 yrs - spinster
 father -John Williams-(deceased) coal miner

   Problem is as I said earlier the ages given in the 1861 and 1871 differ so much.
