1841 and 1861 look-up Gloucestershire, COMPLETE
« on: Sunday 26 December 04 17:10 GMT (UK) »
Would sks let me know whether it is possible to discover Benjamin WEBB in either of these censuses?

He was born circa 1801 - 1803 in North Nibley.  I have been unable to trace his parents so far.

By 1851 he was married to Hannah (nee MALPUS) and living in Sinwell near Wotton-under-Edge.  After that I lose him again.

In 1841 he may have had sons George (born 1824) and Henry (born 1828) living with him.

This is one of my main family lines and I am in despair.  HELP PLEASE!!

Hi Arranroots, ;D

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that you 'lose' Benjamin after 1851.

Is it any use if I look for him in Wotton-under-Edge in 1861 - or have you already tried this?

Darcy :)

Darcy

Yes PLEASE!!  He (Benjamin) was sent to prison in 1853 and I haven't seen the 1861 census, so don't know what happened to  him.  He is not on 1871 (unless he is hidden in Wales with his son and family), but would be about 68 by then anyway.

Believe he was born about 1803 in North Nibley, married Hannah MALPUS and somewhere along the way he lost an eye!  Would like to think he survived prison.

His sons are George and Henry, both born Wotton, so there is a chance he could be living with them.  George went to Monmouthshire some time between 1853 and 1871.

Thank you in anticipation

Sue

Thanks for that Ros  ;)

It certainly is time I re-examined my assumptions!  Benjamin and Hannah both claim (1851 census) to be local to Nibley/ Wotton under Edge and there were well-established families with same surnames which seem to verify this.  Sadly I cannot definitively link them: they were non-conformist AND reluctant to register family events!

Will have a go at finding MALPUS family in Somerset - you never know, he may even have remarried.

Suspect BW in Cardiff is rather well-to-do for an ex-con!!?? LOL

Thanks for your trouble, Sue

Hi Sue,

sorry I can't find Benjamin Webb in Wooton-under-Edge.

I am giving you the details of a Henry Webb who is a possibility for Benjamin's son. The name/age is correct but he gives his birth place as North Nibley. As this is where Benjamin comes from it might be worth having a look at.

Henry Webb, head, m, 32, Ag. Lab., North Nibley Glos
Sarah, wife, m, 32, Brush maker Wooton-under-edge Glos
Albert, son,12, Scholar, Wooton-under-edge Glos
John, son, 9, Scholar, Wooton-under-edge Glos
William, son, 8, Scholar
George, son, 6, Scholar, Wooton-under-edge Glos
Frederick, son, 4, Scholar, Wooton-under-Edge

PRO REF: RG9/1750
Parish: Wooton-under-Edge
Hamlet: Sinwell & Bradley
Road, Street &c: Pounds Ground
Folio: 65
Page: 10

I think the enumerator got a bit carried away with the scholars!

Thank you VERY much for looking, Darcy (and for letting me know - I can now try other things  ??? ::) ??? )

Yes Henry is Benjamin's son and my George's brother.  His youngest scholar does quite well for himself, so perhaps there is something in this early years education!!

Wotton and North Nibley are very close, and Sinwell (where Benjamin and Hannah are found in 1851 is also nearby), as you probably know.

Back to square one...

Sue
