Absolutely scandalous ! marriage
« on: Tuesday 23 October 07 08:41 BST (UK) »
George ROBERTS born 24 July 1848,Manchester married Sarah Ann HARRISON.

Allegedly in Liverpool !

He and wife & 3 children emigrated to Australia in 1877.

George ROBERTS' relatives were living in West Derby in 1871 & 1881 census !
1881 (RG11/3702/40/14)

The only marriage found is on freebmd is George ROBERTS to Sarah Ann HENRY (Dec 1871 - Ashton 8d 903)

Where could a ROBERTS/HARRISON marriage be hiding ???

Maybe it isn't transcribed yet...

Who/when/where are these '3 kids', do you have any certificate(s) for them?

Family Search have a George Roberts marrying a Sarah Harrison in Silkstone, Yorkshire! :o
5th December 1875.
It comes up on the bmds as "Wortley, vol 9c page 357" Wortley was West Riding of Yorkshire.

Any good?  Might they have left for Oz from Yorkshire?

Hi Pauline

The shipping record states George ROBERTS age 28,Sarah Ann ROBERTS age 24...children Thomas 4,Elizabeth 3 & George Edwin 1.

These were probably ages when these immigrants signed agreement prior to departure date of 11th May 1877...ship arrived in Australia 10th August 1877.

Now to answer question ! I have three b/c's but very uncertain if they are the correct ones !

1) Thomas born 10th Sept 1872,5 Railway View,Ardwick.father George ROBERTS 'book keeper" mother Sarah Ann ROBERTS formerly HENRY (indistinct surname) registered 18 Oct 1872 (Dist:Chorlton - sub Ardwick county Lancaster (8c 632 - Chorlton)

2) Elizabeth born 18th Sept 1873,5 Railway View,Ardwick father same as above - mother Sarah Ann ROBERTS formerly HARRISON reg:11th March 1874...ditto ditto

3) George Edwin born 19th January 1876,60 Armitage Street,Ardwick father George ROBERTS "Commercial Clerk"..mother Sarah Ann ROBERTS formerly HARRISON reg:28th Feb 1876 ditto ditto.

I have even searched the baptisms of St Matthews,Ardwick in year 1873..where the children described in b/c's,Thomas & Elizabeth ROBERTS were both baptised on 21st December 1873...parents George & Sarah Ann ROBERTS "Clerk"....address - 5 Railway View,Ardwick (Baptism Ref: No's 1184 &1185 page 149)

So I am stumped and at my wits end !

Consequently all 13 children born in Australia have either Henry,Harrison & Harris recorded on b/c's and this discrepancy has been transferred to their m/c's & d/c's.

The d/c of Sarah Ann ROBERTS gives her maiden name as HARRISON !Although I know how unreliable d/c's can be !

Hi Kimberley - I tried FreeBMD searching on George Roberts to Sarah Ann (leaving surname blank) 1869 - 1877. There are quite a few - these look most promising taking the area
Dec 1871 Ashton 8d 903 Sarah Ann HENRY *1
Mar 1874 Chorlton 8c 815 Sarah Anne WINSTANLEY *2
Jun 1875 Ashton 8d 855 Sarah Ann MIDDLETON *3

*1 On CheshireBMD as at Ashton-under-Lyne St Peter
*2 On LancashireBMD as Chorlton, registrar attended
*3 On CheshireBMD as at Godley St John

Hi Kimberley
I'd put my twopennethworth on the March 1874 Chorlton registration because Ardwick is included in that registration district

Cheers and good luck

Thank you Barbara !

The b/c's for their children may not be the correct ones !!

The fact that George was employed by Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company and afterwards with Manchester,Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway...may mean he was in Yorkshire for a period ???

Not sure if either of these railway company lines went through,Silkstone or Wortley.

Helpful RootsChatters may wish to be aware (if they aren't already) that there are many threads about this family (including re the question of whether Sarah Ann's maiden surname was HENRY or HARRISON).  And many searches have already been carried out and posted ...

Incidentally, although it is not stated in this thread, it seems that the family migrated to WA (Western Australia).
