What did he do??
« on: Wednesday 24 October 07 22:12 BST (UK) »

Hello

Looking at the 1901 census for my GG grandfather Charles Burch, living at 56 Bellamy Street, Streatham.

It he was only 14 at the time, there is something listed in the profession/occuption section, which looks like

Doctors B??fort  ???

Any ideas??

Thanks
Trippy

Trippy - I am so sorry - I've only just noticed this is only your second post. Welcome to RootsChat!  :)

I did wonder about the Doctor being written without a crossed t - but the enumerator has also written Kensington and Whitechaple in the same way.

The writing under the cross has apparently been added, in a different hand, by the census clerk extracting occupations, on the original would be a different colour.
If you look at Clerk in the entry further up the page the census clerk has annotated it with "CC" for "Commercial Clerk" Further up the page "Sick" has been added to "Monthly Nurse"

A Doctor's Boy delivered medicines, prescriptions etc. to patients houses, and could also act as a page boy.

taking into account what has already been said and clarified as the 'back-office' adding categorisation - I'd say they lumped him in under the category Porter .....
