« on: Sunday 28 October 07 23:10 GMT (UK) »
Checking Manchester burial records for a relation.
Found the relation who died at 123 Crescent Road Manchester and was entered in the register of burials on the 9th February 1928.

Another five burials were carried were out on the same day and all with the same address, 123 Crescent Road.
Some of the burials were still born.

What was this place, hospital for the poor.

Thanks

Hi

Crescent Road was the address  of the North Manchester Workhouse. When workhouses were abolished (think 1930s) it changed its name to the Crumpsal Institute, treating the  mentally ill. In 1939 it was renamed Park House eventually bcame Springfield Hospital in 1948.

You can find more info on workhouses on this link

Institutions such as workhouses, prisons or psychiatric hospitals had alternative addresses which were used when someone was born or died in them.

For example;
 418 Westgate Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was the Union Workhouse, and this address was used on death certificates.
In Liverpool you have
No.144a Brownlow Hill was the Workhouse,
147 Mill Rd is Mill Road Maternity Hospital Built on the site of an early workhouse.
107 Rice Lane Walton is Walton Hospital
42 Belmont Rd is Belmont Rd Hospital
126 Smithdown Road is Sefton General Hospital.
