Summerdown Camp - Preston Pals
« on: Tuesday 30 October 07 09:40 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone supply any information about Summerdown Camp, nr Eastbourne. My grandfather was a member of the 7th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (Preston Pals) during WW1, he was wounded and was convalescing at Summerdown. He met my grandmother whilst he was there, she was a maid at a girls school nearby, they were married in December 1917. The marriage certificate states that he was a soldier serving in France.
Any information about Summerdown or Preston Pals would be much appreciated.
thank you

There are lots of pictures and information about Summerdown Camp in a book called 'Eastbourne's Great War 1914-1918' by Bob [Robert] Elliston.  I don't think it's in print now, but really worth searching out either via the library loan service or through secondhand dealers.

Thanks again for such a prompt reply, have only just joined this merry band, wish I had done so sooner.
