Need help deciphering WWI Medal Card
« on: Thursday 01 November 07 17:58 GMT (UK) »
I have just downloaded my great uncle's WWI Medal Card from the NA and don't understand some of it.

Top line, above name:  S 1C334, then it looks like BW & V ???, 25/11/27

Name:  Travis, Walter

Corps:  Northants Reg't.   Rank:  Comm'y

Corps:  K.O.Y.L.I.   Rank:  Lieut.  (before that on same line is "M.C.")

Medal:  Victory    Roll:  K.O.Y.L.I.  OFF/114  Page:  206D
             British                   "               "                     "

Remarks:  i.v.B/3921 d/28-11-27
                 NW/8/28763

No theatre of war or date of entry.

I have been told he was awarded the Military Cross for service in Egypt.  (I know KOYLI stands for King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.)

Can anyone enlighten me about the other numbers and letters, please?  And does it tell where he might have fought?

Thanks for your help.

it would be best if we could see the card, at present we only have want you think you see  ;D

BW & V  is british war and victory medals

Comm'y is probably commissioned (should be a date there)

"M.C." is obviously military cross

i suspect he was commissioned from the Northants Reg't., into the K.O.Y.L.I.

K.O.Y.L.I.  OFF/114  Page:  206D  this is the actual page in the koyli medal roll, officers section where there should be more details

i.v.B/3921 d/28-11-27  i suspect this is a kings regulation number, possibly when he was sent (re-sent) his medals ( but i'm guessing without the card)

this will not tell you where he fought, you need to know which battalions of the regiments he was with

IV = ISSUE VOUCHER date Nov 1927
If you google London Gazette you should get his citation for the military cross. It can be tricky negotiating the LG site!

Just had quick look cannot find MC Citation yet but think he was 1/4th(TF) Northants Reg.

Thanks Harribobs and Ady.

Yes, I did get his Military Cross medal info from the London Gazette - that's how I found his medal card.

I wanted to post the medal card, but it's together with the five other medal cards on the same page - and over 4 megabytes big!  I managed to convert it from PDF to jpg, but my puny photoshop program won't crop it as it says the file is too large.  What do I do now?  Help!

i can't quite see it, could you make it a little bigger??  ;D ;D ;D

one thing stands out, comm-y is in the rank section and according to the NA  that's 'Commissary'

Sorry about the size Chris - I know size matters!!  ;)

So... where do I go from here?  How do I find out which battallion he was in, how long he served and where he was sent?  Also, how he earned the M.C.

Thanks for your replies.
