Thanks Graceland and Jill for the encouragement!

I've  braved making some phone calls and the main library in Taunton reckoned there was a good chance of finding a reference in their collection of newspapers. I was surprised how helpful they were  ::)

If I can get some extra time off work next week, I shall head for Taunton and start looking at newspapers.

Thanks again

Angela

I suggest you email Taunton Record office on http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/
they should hold copies of the actual inquest, which will be sealed for 75 years. While the newspapers should have the report they will by no means be the full inquest. More likely what bits the court reporter felt like picking out.

As your death occured in 1888,there will be no problem viewing them, providing they are there of course  :)

The record office will be able to have them ready in advance of your visit too.
And possibly even look them up and email or post them to you for a small fee.

Hope this helps,it's a combination of personal experience of Taunton record office and an inquest I needed in London,in which a suicide happened in April 1929.The inquest is closed until 2nd Jan 2005.

All the best

Carol

Thanks very much for that, Carol - I had no idea how the official inquest reports worked.

As it happens, I rang the Record Office and was told that records for that period had been destroyed in fire. Mind you, I didn't know what I was asking for  :-[ so I'll contact them again armed with your information and check again.

This is the first time I've had to deal with an inquest, but the odds are it won't be the last, so thanks very much  :)
