Hi cuckoo !

You might like to take a look at the FIBIS site lots of stuff in there about the British in India and regiments etc

http://www.fibis.org/

If you don't find what you are looking for on FIBIS you can try .......

IGI - they have some records from India - if you do find them there it will give you a date and place  - you can then go to the British Library by Kings Cross - Asia Pacific and Africa Collection and get actual copies of the certificates !

You can also ask your local Family History Center Latter Day Saints - as they have more or less complete records for India ....... You'll probably have to wait a few weeks for them to order them in !

NB ..... You have to go to the British Library to get the certificates they're not online !

Ruby rose gave this advice about the British Library !

Quote
Before I went to the Library I got the reference numbers from the British India Family History website, it helps cut down some of the search time. This link will take you to the page with all the reference numbers for each Presidency and the year (with their IGI equivalent). The last three digits in the OIOC reference are the volume number you need to search in.

http://valmayukuk.tripod.com/id33.html

The Library also has an almost complete collection of Thacker's Directories so you can track your head of family to get an idea of where they were, what they did and when they first arrived in India

Hope this gives you some ideas !!

Hi Annie,
Remember me and William Walker?
Well Cuckoo is a friend of mine- Great info you have provided thought I would try and follow it and tried to search on the Valmay....... link and find the LDS batch? numbers so we could go to the British Library well :-X  ??? :-\ What a pickle I got in and if Angela is anything like me we won't stand a chance. So can I ask you to sort us out  ;D We have found on IGI a reference to a birth of Sarah J Williams 1871  Allabad East, , , India is that enough information to take to the British Library?

Hi Cuckoo,

Liverpool Annie has given you the two main research sites, and I've gathered up those and some others from various postings on RootsChat:

Topic: INDIA: Resources for Ancestors in British India

Good luck,

I'm a bit late for this discussion but I thought I would just try and clarify for Irret and Cuckoo that you don't need the volume numbers to go to the British Library, you can go with a year and place, it just takes longer to find! Staff are helpful but you do have to wait in line.

I've checked on Valmay's website and the details for Allahabad 1871 (Bengal Presidency) are as follows:

N/1/135 Jan-Mar 1871 499041 C750223
N/1/136 Apr-Jun 1871 499042 C750224
N/1/137 Jul-Sep 1871 499043 C750225
N/1/138 Oct-Dec 1871 499044 C750226

So for the first quarter of 1871 the volume number is 135 if you are going to the British Library. The batch number for that quarter is C750223 if you want to do a search on the Family Search website.

Sorry if I have confused you, but it does cut down on the search time if you have an idea of the volume. This was important to me as I didn't have much time, not living in the south.

If there is anything else I can do, please give me a shout.

Regards

Ruby
