Mountjoy Prison Dublin
« on: Tuesday 06 November 07 15:09 GMT (UK) »
I have just found out that one of my ancestors was imprisoned in Mountjoy Prison in Dublin for his part in  the 1916 irish Uprising. Is there a way of searching the prison records

You could try searching for his name or town where he came from on http://irishnewspaperarchives.com/
You may be suprised what you come up with.  ::)

I found one relative on that site, in 1926, who was involved with a double murder along with his future brother in law and also they found an arms dump in the family garden as well as a balaclava and handgun in a shed  ::) (it's the quiet one's you don't expect!) A little later on he was mentioned in the Dáil Éireann asking if he was still in prison and what offences he had been charged with.

While googleing i found this site link
It has photo's of prisoners in mountjoy jail from 1857 and 1866 who were members of the fenian brotherhood. (click on the volume and you get the photo's)

Hi,

The records for Mountjoy prison are now online on www.findmypast.ie.

They give some great details.
