help and advice please
« on: Wednesday 07 November 07 20:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
While going through the CWWG site i found this.
Gray E H private CH/ 2547 Royal Marine light infantry UK
23/11/1918 age unknown.
Grave / memorial ref sp. mem. A.9 Cemetery/ memorial name Archangel allied cemetery.
I have a relative that i am trying to locate who it was believed committed suicide ( family tale ) how do i find more info on the man please like where he came from, where his death would be registered, would it have been notified by the military or not.
And where is the cemetery that is mentioned.
For the surname Gray free B M D dose not go up to 1918 as yet.
Also this man left 4 children when vanished who had to go into the work house, would this have been the practice even in the first world war, his wife having died in child birth.
Thank you.
William James.

Hi William James

If you go back to CWWG and go into the full record for E H GRAY (click on his name)you will see the Cemetery name is also 'hyperlinked' - click on that too, to see a description of the Cemetery......." Archangel, in the north of the Russian Federation".

The full record also states he was on the HMS "Glory".

Cheers

Hi william james !

Your query is actually quite complex.

Workhouses did not officially close until 1930.

If someone died abroad and their death was registered in England & Wales it would be in The Overseas Index of The General Register Office the index of which is available to search for a fee online.

Not sure on the year, but I think suicide was illegal in England & Wales before 1960's, so feel it unlightly that someone who did so would appear on CWGC website, but it would appear that HMS Glory was returned to Russia in 1920's (search google)  ???

Hi William

Deaths outside England and Wales are not being transcribed onto FreeBMD. As Wendi says it will be recorded in the Overseas section. However, I obtained the death certificate of a great-uncle killed in WW1 and all it says is "Killed in Action" which I knew already for free from CWGC. You will get his names at least. But you should get these from his medal index card.

Here is a link to researching Royal Marines - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/marines/step2.htm - the CH in his number refers to his division (of Chatham) which you will need. When I can find my SDGW CD I will see if that gives his names.

His full service record should be available from the FAA museum at Yeovilton
The link above gives details....This should have his family details and everything else about his service on it.
His Medal Roll will be at Kew to tell you what he was entitled to.ADM 171.
