Citing sources for BMD certificates
« on: Thursday 08 November 07 16:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I hope someone can advise me! I've obtained some BMD certificates from the GRO which I want to cite using my family tree software.

Does the COL reference that comes with the certificate (eg, COL123456) have any special significance and should it be cited? If someone else applied for the same certificate, would it come with the same COL reference or is it unique to my application (and therefore rather meaningless)?

Thanks, Roger

I would guess it is the order number - Certificates OnLine - the last two I ordered (together) have the same "Application Number".
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Hi Roger,

I use the index reference (GRO or LRO depending where you purchased the certificate).  I also add a second citation to show I have a copy of the actual certificate.

The COL reference is just the order number that you were allocated when you ordered the certificate.

Hope this helps,

Jean
