Gedcom help please
« on: Friday 09 November 07 10:28 GMT (UK) »
Hello all.  Please can someone advise me in simple language how I send a copy of my gedcom to a person who is a definite connection to my tree.  She has a programme she can open it on.  I need to send it via Outlook Express and have my tree on GR.  Thank you.

Out put your file to Gedcom. Save it where you can find it again then just add the file to your e-mail as an attachment

Thanks JKSdelver.  Do I have it sent by GR to me as an email and then just r-click on it and save it in my documents then?

If that is where your family tree is stored then I would think so. Not putting my tree on Genes (because of cloning) if that what you mean, then I am not sure of how to do that

You don't need to save the gedcom in your own filestore you can drag it to the new email or simply forward the email from GR.

Click on the Help section in GR and type in: gedcom

The instructions are straight forward.

Not putting my tree on Genes (because of cloning)

If you give someone access to your tree on GR then they would have to type all your information manually into their tree in order to duplicate your data.  It's probably not cloning as they are likely to make mistakes.  The only way of cloning your tree is if you send them your GR gedcom file and they merge it on their PC at home and then import it back into their GR tree.

Apart from my own name I haven’t a tree on Genes. Others who I have shared information with, and asked them not to put it on the net have done so. To make the information different they have put a different place of birth against the names.  These have since been copied and added to Genes either by sharing or typed in manually by others. Some of these places of birth at the time scale didn’t even exist.
In the end its all the same.
