WATTS / OSLER / HALLS
« on: Saturday 10 November 07 13:44 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone link to the OSLER, WATTS or HALLS family who lived in and around the Downham Market / Southery area?

I am particularly interested in the Mary Elizabeth OSLER who married John William WATTS in Wisbech Q4 1899.  Who were their respective parents?

Also hoping for a lead on Edith Mary OS(t)LER born c1877, daughter of Nathaniel OSLER.  I've been unable to find a birth registered for Edith (or Mary) in 1876, 1877 or 1878 and wonder if someone might have access the the Southery PRs.  Does her christening reveal further info...?

Edith Mary OSLER had a daughter Hilda May in 1899. Edith later married Frederick William HALLS (born Downham Market 1877), son of William. From c1914, Edith Fred and Hilda lived in Thetford.

Dear Eileen

Thanks so much for this, it's confirmed Mary Elizabeth OSLER's father which is great.

I don't suppose John William WATTS' father is named, is he? I see that Thomas William WATTS was one of the witnesses so he could be a candidate. On the other hand, he could be a cousin or maybe a brother . . .

Regards,
Joy

Hi Yokel

Many thanks for sending me the census info for these families.  I'm pretty sure this is the right family for Mary - daughter of George OSTLER.  Although, Edith I'm not quite so sure about.

On her marriage certificate to Frederick HALLS, Edith Mary OSLER says she is the daughter of Nathan OSLER (deceased by Q3 1916.)  However I can't find a birth indexed for an Edith OSLER c1877, only a Mary OSLER.  In addition, 'Edith OSLER' isn't listed on any census as Nathan OSLER's daughter.

In 1881, Mary A. OSLER age 5, is with her grandmother Frances ENGLISH (Nathan's wife Sarah who died in 1877, was nee ENGLISH)

In 1891  Mary OSLER (born c1877) appears with Nathan as his daughter.

In 1901 Edith Mary OSLER (born c1877) is with daughter Hilda May OSLER.

So the big question is, did Mary OSLER become Edith Mary OSLER  or, am I looking at two different people?

with kind regards
Joy

Hi Joy,
John's father was not given. :(
but seeing his abode is Bolsover, (which is in Derbyshire) this may be him in 1881 census.
Charles Turner 53    Chesterfield Derby Retired Butcher
Hannah    ..      50             ..              ..
Annie        ..      22  daur   ..           ..
JOHN W WATTS Nephew 5   ..        ..
7 Elder Yard
Chesterfield Derby.

It maybe a good idea to post a lookup for him on the 1891 census, on the Derbyshire board he maybe with his parents.

Hi Eileen

I'm fairly sure that John came originally from Norfolk.  In the 1901 census he is in Staveley with his wife Mary and daughter Gladys and tells the enumerator he is from Wretton, Norfolk. Mary is from East Walton, (Waldon?) Norfolk.

The problem is, there are three possible WATTS families who lived in and around the Downham area, all with a son John born c1877.  To make it even more confusing, another John W WATTS married (Rosa Anderson) in Downham Q1 1899!

Aaagh, how frustrating!
