Number of children?
« on: Saturday 10 November 07 15:11 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me how (if it is possible) to account for ALL children born to the same parents.  ::)  also if a partner remarries is their anyway of accounting for all the children produced from one parent?  :P
I only know of census information which allows infant deaths to slip through without being recorded.

Any help much appreciated

Baptism records are a good source, burial/cemetery records are another.

Very difficult to know when you might have 'all' the children. Often children weren't baptised and earlier stillbirths (as well as living ones) weren't recorded. Even when you are told a number of children in a family it can be extremely difficult to find all the children.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

crystalight - I understand that the 1911 census asked for the number of children in the present marriage and the split between those living and those dead.
I agree prior to 1910 when there is no maiden name on the indices for England & Wales it is particularly difficult to be sure that you have traced all siblings. The census helps for those alive on those dates, but I have instances where children were at another relative's home on their first census and then working & living away by their second, so are difficult to identify without other knowledge or sources. 1911 may create a few more mysteries for us all when released (?1909?).
