Does this name ring a bell with any posters, he was my GGrandfather, he went to work one day at the London Docks and never came back, after 7 yrs he was declared dead possibly by drowning, but rumor has it he stowed away on a ship America bound!!! I have no idea where to start checking this rumour, any suggestions.

When was the last time he was heard from? (Or, when was his last child born/last census entry if that's all you know).

You could possibly try the overseas/marine death indexes in case he's there. Otherwise you might be in for a long trawl through local newspapers to see if there's any mention.
