Lowdons of Seaton Burn
« on: Monday 12 November 07 20:31 GMT (UK) »
George Lowdon was born 6.7.1843 in Seaton Burn.He is on the USA 1880 census, living with his English born wife Susan (formerly Suzanna Lynn) and their three daughters. in Pennsylvania, USA
I understand that after Suzanna died, and the house burned down, he returned to England with the two elder girls, Mary and Isabella - so presumable the baby, Margaret must have died too. I can find no sign of George & Suzanna's marriage. I don't think in those days they would have emigrated before being married.
I can't find Suzanna's or Margaret's death in USA.
Any help much appreciated.

Liz,

Surely George could have emigrated as a young single man with his parents or brothers and met and married English Suzanna/Susanna over there.

There were other Seaton Burn-born Lowdon returnees with US-born children on later England censuses.

Do you know when George left England. On which England censuses does George appear ?. Where was his wife born ? On which England censuses does she appear ?

Thanks for that, Michael, I'd always thought that because Susan appeared on the US Census as born in England,  that they went out to Pennsylvania together. Shouldn't presume!
George was born 6. 7. 1843 at Seaton Burn, to Richard and Isabell Lowdon. The family are on the 1851 Census living at Seaton Burn.
I don't have a date for George setting off on his travels.
He and Susan are on the 1880 US census with their three daughters, living in Gillespie, Fayette County. This is all I have for Susan, but from family(now deceased), I know that she was called Suzanna Lynn.
George and the two eldest girls are on the 1891 census, back at Seaton Burn
Mary, the eldest, returned to America,to found a dynasty, and Isabella married Andrew Craig  and stayed in Seaton Burn to have 10 children.

Liz,

Just adding a snippet to Daisy's info........

The mining village of Seaton Burn* lay within the Township**
of Weetslade, which lay within the Parish of Longbenton.

Census enumerators were instructed to record folk's "place of birth" or "parish of birth".

So the birth places of "Longbenton" on C1861 does not necessarily clash with "Seaton Burn" !

* Trivia... The Seaton Burn, the watery thing, not the village, flows into the sea at Seaton Sluice.

** A "Township" was a sub-division of a parish, not connected to the word "Town".

 Daisy
Many thanks for the 1861 census. I have the family living in Seaton Burn in 1851 with 7 children, and now they are here 10 years later with 3 still at home. It gives you an indication what life was like, when Richard was still down the pit at 59, and Richard junior at 11.
I don't suppose you have anything in the 1871 records, do you?

Michael,
Thanks for the info. I knew Seaton Burn as a child, as I still had an Aunt living there. I think the A1 bypasses it all now.  We used to have our Sunday School outings at Seaton Sluice.

regards

Hi,

This looks like Richard & Isabella in 1871 transcribed as COWDON,

1871  RG10/5127  f.43  p.30  Weetslade, Northumberland
Seaton Burn

Richard LOWDON  Head  Mar  70  Miner  Nortumberland Benton
Isabella    "  "       Wife  Mar  66                  "  "            "  "

I can't see George anywhere in 1871 but I did find this in the New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957,

Geo LOWDEN
17
Male
Labr
Destination: United States of America
Place of Origin: Great Britain
Steerage

Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York
Arrival Date: 28 May 1861
Line: 26
Microfilm Serial: M237
Microfilm Roll: M237_211
List Number: 483
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States

Possibly your George left right after the 7 April 1861 census :-\
