Hiraeth - memories of Home
« on: Tuesday 13 November 07 14:11 GMT (UK) »
There seem to be a few threads at the moment on County boards - Lancashire and Bedfordshire, for example, that talk about memories of place and food and recipes. How about a Welsh one?

I think that's a great idea, Gadget. I'll buy some extra Kleenex, just in case! There's an interesting  thread on www.tredegar.co.uk about the Tredegar dialect and some of the local sayings. I could hear the voices as I was reading the postings. Made me quite hoimesick.

I've no connection with Wales, but I always get a lump in my throat when a Welsh Male Voice choir sings the song, which I think has something to do with Hiraeth.

We'll keep a Welcome in the hillsides
We'll keep a Welcome in the vales
We'll kiss away each hour of hiraeth
When you come home again to Wales

Is that the one?

I remember being in the Urdd  at school. I loved the little triangular badge with the red white and green. Does it still exist - what was the full name - Urdd Gobaith Cymru. I think translates as Welsh Youth Movement,

Gadget, did you ever go the Urdd camp at Llangranog? I went twice. I remember it was a long walk from where the buses dropped us to the camp itself. On my first visit I ended up with blisters on my fingers from carrying my suitcase. They went all septicky and yucky.

According to Wikipaedia there were 50,000 in 2006, so I's say it's still going strong! The Urdd website is very good. Oh, no, I'm nostalging again!!!!

For as long as I have left, I shall remember last year, when after a lifetime of waiting I finally set my feet on Snowdon.
Other peole go for a week and complain the weather stopped them going to the top.
I had one day and the sun shone. I had to go up by the little railway, the years have been kind, but not that kind.
I took photos of my Welsh grandfather and his daughter, my dear little mum with me. I also took a photo of my father, he loved a bit of scenery.
Felt very close to them all.
Then we started on the way down. The sky clouded over and by the time we were in the car hail stones the size of golf balls were bouncing off the lid.
But she gave me the time to go up there, the Mother Mountain, she gave me the time.
