Convent in Deal in 1881
« on: Wednesday 14 November 07 16:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have a great aunt who was a boarder in this Convent in Deal in 1881, Queen Street Convent and Orphanage. Census Ref RG11/997 Folio 74. No name of Order showing.

Does anyone know the name of the Order and if I can track her after 1881. She may or may not have stayed in the Order but I can't find her in marriages or deaths after 1881 so am presuming, rightly or wrongly, that she became a Nun.

She was registered at birth as Ravina Woodruff born 1868 in Dublin but is showing in Deal in 1881 as Rosina. That may be a mistranscription. Her parents, William and Mary Woodruff,  were living in Hougham in 1881.

Hope there is some kind person out there with any ideas as to where she got to after 1881.

Regards,

Margaret

Can't see them in 1891 but they are in Kent in 1871.
RG10; Piece: 1017; Folio: 61; Page: 9
District Camp 3rd Foot, Cheriton, Kent
William WOODRUFFE, Soldier mar 37, Corporal 2/3 Foot, born Glossop, Derby
Mary WOODRUFFE, wife mar 26, Laundress, born Ireland
John WOODRUFFE, son 7, Scholar, born Gibraltar
next page
Ravina WOODRUFFE, dau 3, Scholar, born Ireland
Frederick WOODRUFFE, son 1, born Aldershot, Hampshire

She is listed as a Scholar in 1881, so it was probably a Catholic boarding school.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for that.  :) I have this family, except for the 2 daughters, up to their marriages and deaths.  Parents and brothers moved to Sheffield by 1891.

That is the family I am referring to and am very interested in Ravina's movements  after 1881.

Regards,

Margaret

Hi Margaret.

I saw a friend today who went to the Convent School in Deal.
She remembers the name, it was St. Ethelburga's Convent, but not the name of the Order.
If she, or her mother, remember the Order, she will let me know.

In an 1899 directory, there is mention of the convent and orphanage of St Ethelburga at West Street (established 1871) with the teaching by the sisters of Notre Dame des Missions who also ran the "Sacred Heart" school.

Hi Margaret
I am in Australia and was educated at St Ethelburgas Convent in the 1950s by the Good Samaratin nuns.
Hope this helps,

Thank you Colleen.

I wrote to Southwark records office but they still have not replied, so I don't know whether I can trace her after 1881 or not.

Would you think that she may have gone to Ireland or some other Convent in England? Was it a large building?

I see you are new to this site so may I say Welcome and hope your searches are fruitfull. ;D

Regards,

Margaret
