Thomas’ age seems to vary quite a bit but it looks like he would have been nearer to 25 than 35 in 1874. The third child is called John (not James). There is no birth registration for a James Gibbons in Berwick within two years either side of 1881 but there is one for John. William Gibbons did not marry Ellen Yorke until 1909, so it fits that he would still be with his father in 1901.
