Pownall - Birch, 1882 Wellington.
« on: Thursday 15 November 07 21:43 GMT (UK) »
I'm just wondering if anyone has any links to this marriage.

My grandfathers sister Esther Pownall married Benjamin Birch in Wellington
1882April - June qtr.    This is them in the 1891 census -

Address “Royal Oak” High St, Wellington.
Head - Benjamin Birch age 35, a publican born Wellington.
Wife - Esther Birch (nee Pownall) age 27, born Liverpool.
Daughter - Alice Mary Birch age 8, scholar.
Edith Elizabeth age 6, scholar.
Benjamin Birch age 4.
Margaret Birch age 8 months .

Because Esther's parents died about 6 years before her marriage, my grandfather who would have been 9 in this census has disappeared.  He was probably with one of his older sisters Mary or Maria, but I have no idea what their married names were.   It looks like the first census Harry will appear in will be 1911 when he would be 40.  After his birth all I know his he joined the army in 1893 and served in India, his marriage in 1902 is the first public record I have found of him until his death.

I'm hoping that if someone is researching BIRCH they may be able to solve this mystery. A long shot, but you never know do you?  cheers fred

I'm a little confused

is it Harry pownall b. 1882 you are looking for?

Whose son was he and where was he born???

Abraham and margaret seemingly died a few years before he was born????

Can you fill in what details you have re harry

Hi Suz - I bumped up my original search.  As you will see I started off chasing the wrong grandfather, but after years of nothing it turned out Harry was Mary according to the marriage certificate, a rather ornate H.

As Esther's husband was landlord of the "Royal Oak" in Wellington I thought I might approach the search though them, if they can be found, but they may know less than me.

I've searched in vain 1881, 1891, 1901, but my Harry doesn't appear, not under his real name anyway.  But I would like to know of Esthers family if possible, so I might take a trip to Wellington.    I imagine if I could find the sisters I would find Harry, but there are so many marriages, a lot of certificates.   fred

Confused!!!!  By me ?????   that can't be true!!!       Come on Suz and Carol get your act together, I need some help.   ;D

Yes I said Harry would be 9, it should have been 19 (b 1871 Wellington Shrops)

By asking about Esther Pownalls marriage to Benjamin Birch I'm hoping that someone researching Birch might have info about the missing years of my grandad Harry Pownall.

I've given up, no sign of Harry Pownall born 1871 in the 1881, 1891, or 1901 census.  One Harry does appear in Macclesfield but it turned out not to be my Harry.

I found Esthers marriage as she stayed in Wellington, Shropshire, but it looks like elder sisters Maria and Mary moved back to Lancashire where they were born (West Derby )     There are a lot of Mary Pownall's, not many Maria's, but I don't fancy having to buy loads of certificates to find out their married names.  If I can I might find Harry in the census using the wrong surname, it may have been completely mis-spelt

1858 - Mary Pownall born West Derby, Liverpool. Sept qtr, 8b / 314
Later in Harry’s Army papers Mary is said to be married and living Bacup,    Lancs?

1859 - Maria Pownall  born 7th Nov 1859.  West Derby, Liverpool, Dec qtr 8b / 41
But baptised 25th July 1860, Wellington, Shropshire. Later said to be married and living in Elland, Leeds.   If only they had added their married names.

Parents Abraham and Margaret look like they died in Oldham (1875-76)

Thanks you two for taking the time to read this, I guess I'll have to pick out a marriage or two and hope I get lucky.  it would be nice to know where Harry lived before entering the army in 1893.      Cheers fred.
