First communion & confirmation records
« on: Tuesday 20 November 07 19:34 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if records are kept for people taking their first communion or confirmation? If so where would they likely to be kept - at the relevant church?

Thank you

I'm not sure about that Zoe.  I've made both of them, at the same church, but don't know if they have kept records.  I suppose somebody has somewhere ;D

Might be worthwhile to contact the individual church. I know my baptism and confirmation records are held on file in that church as I had to get copies of them.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

When I got married I had to go to the church I was confirmed in to get a copy of my
confirmation certificate the priest copied it from a ledger
but sadly the church was demolished two weeks ago
so if I needed one now I think I would have to contact the bishops office to
find out how to get one

They should definitely be on file somewhere, either the church or the diocese office or a library they might have turned their archives over to. I know many churches would want proof of this when you want to get married.

I had to get a copy of my baptism certificate and when I rec'd the same it had the date of my confirmation on it as well.  I was quite surprised as I was baptised in one city and had my confirmation in another city.  It didn't have the date of my first communion on it though.

Thank you everyone for your replies, they were all very useful and have given me something to go on  :D

I'm assuming that it would be very unusual if not impossible to be confirmed at a church which wasn't in the same Parish or even in the same part of the country that you were living in at the time?

I didn't realise that you have to have proof of your confirmation when you wanted to get married. That will be something to bear in mind if/when me and the OH actually get married (we've been engaged for 11  :o :D :D)

Some churches require proof of baptism at time of marriage. I remember my uncle got baptised just before his wedding- not sure if it was required, suggested or just something my uncle wanted to do then.

I was confirmed as an adult in the C of E. I don't recall signing anything, or any other records being made at the time.

My godmother, learning of my interest in family trees, has sent me a whole swathe of stuff! One of which was a record of my baptism.
