McKnights of Ochiltree, Ayr
« on: Tuesday 20 November 07 21:36 GMT (UK) »
George Mcknight b 1755-1777 Ochiltree ( Stair OPR has age at death as unknown. Ochiltree OPR has his age as 85 and headstone has his age as 76!) and wife Margaret Goldie/Gouldie b 1774 Ochiltree.  George died in 1840 and wife Margaret died aged 76 in 1850.
Am trying to connect him with John Mcknight and Jean Rankin family of New Cumnock.
Think I've hit my brick wall! Any help gratefully received.

There seems to be a large gap between children but then the death cert for John does have two deceased spaces for mother which could mean two marriages for his father.

Let me know which way to go from here if you wish to look for anything.

Hi L L
:)  Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.  It is much appreciated.

I am descended from John b.1804 and although I have some census information on the sons, I didn't have any details of the daughters and your Agnes information is really interesting.
The children listed on the IGI are:
James b. 1800
Agnes  b.1802
John  b.1804
Jean  b.1807
George b.1813
William  b1815
and Margaret  b. 1822.

I would like to be able to find the birth entries for both George McKnight and Margaret Goldie and also their marriage entry if this is a possibility. This would prove their respective ages.  Hopefully one day I may even discover the names of George's parents and be able to go back another generation!
Thanks again for your time.

Knowing that George and Margaret Goldie had their last two children in Stair I am concentrating in this area.  When I searched for McKnight I came up with Births for :

02 May 1839 Margaret McKnight born to John McKnight and Mary Brackenridge

And

30 Mar 1839 Agnes McKnight born to George McKnight and Jean Marr
07 Dec 1840 Margaret McKnight born to George McKnight and Jean Marr
24 Apr 1842 Margaret McKnight born to George McKnight and Jean Marr
13 May 1846 Agnes McKnight born to George Mcknight and Jean Marr
14 May 1844 David Paton McKnight born to George McKnight and Jean Marr

On the Death cert for George McKnight who is the father for those listed above it states:

Auchinleck 1879 12 Dec
George McKnight Railway Surfaceman Married to Jean Marr age 66
Father George McKnight pioneer deceased
Margaret Mcknight MS GOUDIE deceased
run over by express train
signed David McKnight son 55 nab?? Street Glasgow.
There are notations in the side that would indicate a corrrection to the record but I can not read them.

Wondering if you have looked through records for your Margaret Goldie/Gouldie with the last name as GOUDIE?

When I did a birth search for the years 1773 to 1775 I found one:
Parish Maybole 28 Nov 1774
James Goudie and Jennet Sluss

Margaret Goudy procreate betwixt James Goudie on Innehill? and Jennet Sluss spouses as born the 27th Nov 1774 and baptised the 28th at Maybole

Have tried various spellings of Goldie in searches.  LDS states Goldie or Goudie for Margaret.  Goldie on son John's death cert. but Gouldie on headstone.  Think it depends on who was writing it at the time and how they heard it pronounced as many could not write.
The information from the death cert. of George was really good thanks. Had a look at it on Scotlandspeople and think the margin notes say result of precognition? see reg of corr. entries.  As his death was the result of an accident I assume this entry has details of an inquest as I have come across this before, but there appears to be no way to view this at the moment.
I think that the birth entry you have found for Mgt in Maybole is very likely the correct one. LDS states her birth about 1774 and Maybole is not too far away from Ochiltree and Stair.
Did a search a couple of years ago on George senior and came up with a birth date of 1744 on the origins network .  You can order a transcription but only if you have the parents names and place of birth!  Bit of a catch 22 situation.
Couldn't find anything on Scotlandspeople.

Thanks for all your help :)

I have George and Agnes McKnight of Ochiltree in my line. His daughter,Agnes, married Robert Kerr  and their daughter, Margaret Kerr, married Peter Bowie. They had a daughter Agnes McKnight Bowie, who died a spinster in 1947 at 68 Bonnieton Sq in Kilmarnock where she was born. Agnes McKnight Snr died in Kilmarnock too. Agnes McKnight Bowie was my fathers great aunt.
I see there are enquiries and replies about this family which I have taken note of for my family tree.

I am descendant of George McKnight/Margaret Goldie, John McKnight/ Mary Brackenridge

On George McKnight/Susanna Rankin (sometimes Rankine), their children were:
Cunningham born 17.3.1818
William born 1.4.1810
Mary born 25.12.1803
Jean born 8.5.1816
Ketty born 12.2.1806
Mary born 19.10.1806
John born 30.11.1813
Betty born 23.5.1800
James born 23.12.1812
George born 16.3.1806
All born in New Cumnock, Ayrshire.

On George McKnight and Margaret Goldie.  I found an OPR death record for George McKnight (no age given) but his occupation is noted as Pioneer.  Died
12th June 1840, Crofshill, Stair.  Also have OPR record for the death of Margaret McKnight, 13th Nov 1850, where it states she is the Widow of George McKnight, pioneer.  Both died at Crofshill, Stair, Ayrshire.  So assume this to be George and Margaret Goldie?

George and Margaret Goldie as far as I can find had 8 Children:
John McKnight Born 30.9.1804 Crofshill, Stair. Died 15 May 1857, Riccarton, Kilmarnock,
Joseph McKnight  Born Abt. 1810 Old Cumnock, died 28 Aug 1867, Port Dundas.
Margaret Born 5.12.1822, Stair
William Born 10.12.1815, Stair
Agnes Born 27.6.1802, Ochiltree, died 6.7.1870 Edinburgh
James Born 10.8.1800 , Ochiltree, died 3.10.1869 Edinburgh
Hugh Rorison Born 30.9.1818, Stair. died 31.1.1906 Edinburgh.
George B 14.2.1813, Stair.

John and Mary Brackenridge as far as I can find, had 8 children:

John born 4.4.1885 Riccarton, died 25.8.1913, St.Quivox, Ayr
Margaret born 2.6.1839, Stair, died 18.7.1899, Kirkgatehead, Irvine
George born 3.4.1843 Old Cumnock
John born 14.3.1847, Old Cumnock
James born 1.4.1849, Old Cumnock
Joseph born 13.6.1851, Old Cumnock, died 12.3.1873 Riccarton, Kilmarnock
Jean born 9.4.1841, Old Cumnock
Wiliam born 17.4.1853, Riccarton, Kilmarnock.

Hope this can help.  I am just having difficulty finding the parents and siblings of of George McKnight and Margaret Goldie.

Hi kimmck,

I don't have a connection with George and Susanna Rankin but am also descended from George/Mgt Goldie
and John/Mary Brackenridge.

The difficulty is that George's birth does not seem to appear on any of the OPRs.  As stated in my original post, Stair OPR has his age at death unknown and cause of death was 'frailty' old age.  Ochiltree OPR however has his age at death as 85y.  His memorial inscription in Ochiltree Churchyard states his age as 76y.

The only thing I know for sure is that he died in 1840 in Crosshill, Ochiltree.

Of John and Mary Brackenridge's children,

John b.1855 Riccarton died in 1910 in Detroit, Michigan.

William b. 1853 Riccarton died 19631 in Lewiston, Cache, Utah.

George b.1843 died 1908 in Riccarton. (I am descended from this George)

You have another John b.1885 d 1913 in St Quivox who does not belong
with this group of children.

If you have any luck with the parents and siblings of George and Mgt Goldie please let me know as this has been driving me mad for years.  On the plus side, I have ruled out lots of prospective parents. :)

Hit Cat 30,
Sorry about John St. Quivox that was a slip.

You can actually Google map and view  Crosshill Cottages, Stair, Ayrshire (it comes under Stair) It was on the Barskimming Estate.  Ochiltree is not so far away. I originally came from that area.

I am currently putting together a list of all the McKnights  born in that area just to see if I can find other connections.

One thing I did come across on Ancestry.com was a descendant of the same branch who seemed to think that George McKnight's parents were John McKnight+Margaret Hair, I have asked how they established that, am waiting on a response, response aside, in the OPR Births I did come across a John McKnight married to Margaret Hair and so far I have come across two births to them:
George      28 September 1777   New Cumnock
Hugh      5 August 1773   New Cumnock

Will let you know if I find out anything more.
