Please help to identify this uniform and improve photo
« on: Tuesday 20 November 07 22:43 GMT (UK) »
I wonder whether somebody could please let me have some information about the uniform my grandmother's husband is wearing in this photograph. I do not have very much information about him. At the time of their marriage in 1915 he was a Private in the Somerset Regiment and his place of residence was 'the docks, Southampton'. My grandmother told my mother that he spent a lot of time in India. I hope someone can help. I would also appreciate it if the photo (which is a copy of the original) could be cleaned up.

Here is a bit of a tidy up for you.

It would be a good idea , if you could scan his collar badge at very high resoloution ,also to put this picture on the military board.

This would be the colour of the uniform in your picture.
=========================================

The Somerset Light Infantry
The uniform is an early 20th century full dress uniform. The
jacket is scarlet with royal blue collar and cuffs and white
piping. The collar badges are brass, 1881-1902 pattern as are the GS
buttons. The badges of rank etc are gold. The trousers are royal blue
with a red stripe.

The medals he is wearing are we think Indian General Service, and an Army Long Service

The chevron stripes,  which are fixed on the upper sleeve,  and the "vee" is pointing downwards,  are badges of rank.
The chevron stripes,  which are fixed on the lower sleeve,  with the "vee" pointing upwards,  are badge of "long service"
