How far back can one go with dates and tracing relatives I'm back as far as 1803 with a very common name Davies/Davis, and where can I look on the web.

All suggestions welcomed

Hello crab4, Welcome to Rootschat!  Your question is one that many beginners (and not-so-beginners ask!)... ;D  If one of your family lines traces back into royalty, those lines are pretty well documented back to before 1066 in the case of William the Conqueror, and into the 800's in the case of Charlemagne.  And, when you start your quest, you never know it will lead you, so just take it methodically and, with the wonderful help of Rootschatters everywhere, have a fantastic quest! Hi crab4

The LDS site is one of the most useful sites, there are some records on there which go back as far as the 1500s.

http://www.familysearch.org/

Don't get too excited yet though, not all areas have so much coverage and although I've had some success, there are other branches for which I've had nothing from the site. Which area or country are your Davies/Davis from? It does get quite difficult when it's a common name. And although it would be very exciting to find some royalty, you'll probably be like the rest of us and find loads of Agricultural Labourers and Miners!
Bell, Salter, Street - Devon, Middlesbrough.
Lickess- North Yorkshire, Middlesbrough.
Etherington - North Yorks and Durham.
Barker- North Yorks
Crooks- Durham
Forster- North Yorks/Durham
Newsam, Pattison, Proud - North Yorks.
Timothy, Griffiths, Jones - South Wales

Hi crab4

Welcome to Rootschat.  Try this site www.freereg.org.uk.  Your area may not be on there, but if it is, it's a very helpful site.

Parish registers are a great help, even better if you live close to the area you're looking for.  Some of them go right back to the 1500s in our local record office.

Pallots marriages on Ancestry can be helpful, if you don't subscribe, lots of rootschatters do and will do look-ups for you.

There are lots of different sites for the villages that you are searching for, and they often have a family history forum.

Good luck with your searching

Rosemary
