Which Cemetery??
« on: Wednesday 21 November 07 17:03 GMT (UK) »
I have a 2xgt grandfather who died in Bath Royal Infirmary in 1876.  His wife's address at the time was in "Neston" or "Weston", Bath - though she may just have had temporary lodgings there whilst he was in hospital.

Do any Rootschatters who know Bath and the surrounding area (as I do not!) have any idea where he might have been buried at that time?  He was in service as a coachman and not local to the area - they had previously lived in Calne, Wiltshire and his wife returned there after his death.

Any ideas, anyone?!

Hi

I think it may be All Saints Church in Weston.

Cheers

Thank you for your ideas - I have had some other people give me their ideas on the address on the death certificate - which seems to be Neston.  So, I guess I could try looking for a grave at the Neston parish church (if he was taken home to be buried) or else in the 1870s "municipal" cemetery in Bath (if he was buried from the hospital) - would that have been the "Abbey" cemetery?  Abbey is the registration district on the death certificate ...

There isn't a cemetery at the Abbey itself.  I'm not sure exactly which area Abbey District would have covered.

I know you said the death certificate says 'Neston' but I haven't ever heard of that district being in Bath (although maybe it used to and no longer exists?).  I think it's more likely to be Weston (  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weston,_Bath  )

There are lots of cemeteries in Bath ( http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/BathNES/communityandliving/deaths/cems.htm
I think Locksbrook is the closest one to Weston.

Weston is shown top/middle of this map...

ETA  I've worked out how to remove the map I posted above, having read the post about copyright.  I have also PMd the moderator of this section about it.  I do apologise and won't do it again.

Thank you all for your help!  It's tough trying to work out (from a distance) where someone would have been buried 130-odd years ago in a town they didn't know either!

The burial registers at Calne in Wiltshire (where his daughter lived), Neston near Corsham (where he was working when he was taken ill) and St. James and Abbey in Bath have all been checked and William Hunt's burial isn't noted in any of them.

One person mentioned that they thought the hospital had it's own burial ground - but I can find no reference to this at the hospital website, in A2A nor in Bath's own list of cemeteries, so I think that must be a red herring.

Can anyone suggest another likely candidate?  I'm beginning to think they must have tipped him in a ditch!
