Magiltons of Killyleagh
« on: Wednesday 21 November 07 19:10 GMT (UK) »
My great grandmother was Ellen Magilton from Killyleagh, daughter of Hugh.  She married Charles (Karl) Robert Kannenberg, a Prussian seaman who came to work for the McClurgs, sailing ships for them.  I cannot find out much about the Magiltons - they all seem to be Ellen and Hugh!  I have a few colourful stories about Capt. Kannenberg!  They later went to live in Toye and when he gave up sailing, they set up a shop there and had 9 children.
Any info. gratefully received!
Leona

Hi Leona and welcome to Rootschat.
Ros Davies has some Magiltons on her site that you might want to check out.

You are right about there being lots of Hughs.
Good luck,

Welcome to RootsChat Leona.

Click here for a map of Toye. I see from your message on Rootsweb "Thinking outside the box' - McCLURG" posted in 2004 that you mention the Ships' Lists at Kew.  PRONI have some lists on Microfilm  ... Shipping Agreements and Crew Lists. [Copy of TRANS/2A] MIC.574.

Must make another visit across to Ireland one day.

Hi Leona,

I've not come across the name Magilton before.

Would James "Jim" Magilton who was born in Belfast and is a former NI footballer be related?

The Killyleagh website - History section shows Henry Magilton, baker, Black Street.

If you haven't already done so it would do no harm to send a message to the Down Recorder.

It's quite an unusual name and seems to be quite local to that area.  Sometimes you find McGilton.  There is a Magilton's Mill not too far away and we visited in 2001.  I suppose all the Magiltons were related at one point!  Don't think the Belfast one is related but........who knows?  I have gleaned what I can from online sites and Down lookups, Griffiths, etc.  The Down Recorder were very helpful trying to find Capt. Kannenberg's shipwreck but with no luck. I can't find what ship he was on so can't search any ship's lists.  For research at Kew you need the ship's name as not searchable by surname.  What fun - such a compulsive hobby!
Thanks again,
Leona

Hi Leona,

There's an online list of Wrecks in and around Strangford Lough. Unfortunately it only gives the name and type of vessel as well as the type of cargo being carried. In some instances there are a few other comments.

Yep! - tried that!  And tried matching the ship's names against those belonging to Alexander McClurg (who he sailed for) but didn't get a match.
One day I'll get the elusive bit of the jigsaw!

Hi,
re the prussian sea man shipwrecked of Ireland, would love to hear from you as I thought he married Margaret Magenty and moved to South Africa.  their son thomas henry came to England to fight for the british army during WW1 and was billetted with my gggrandparents.  Have you had any more luck finding the ship?
