Hi Mike,
I notice that on the 1881 Census John Wigley is born about 1844, could this be your
John in 1871 Census
RG10/3628 Pg 69 Sch. 76
Stanton Lees, Derbyshire

Wigley John      25   un married   Farm Servant      Wirksworth.

As he is giving slightly different dates of birth are you sure this is not him in 1851 Census
when age is give as 6 so born abt 1845.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS TAKEN FROM THE WIRKSWORTH SITE
www.wirksworth.org.uk

#001---Holley Farms?---[Bonsall]---(p1, Brassington district, Enumeration district 11b, HO 107/2146)
Bn076a   Joshua         WIGLEY         Head      M  31  M   Lead miner          Bonsall
Bn076b   Ann            WIGLEY         Wife      M  30  F                       Wirksworth
Bn076c   Ellen          WIGLEY         Dau          8   F   Scholar             Bonsall
Bn076d   John           WIGLEY         Son          6   M   Scholar             Bonsall
Bn076e   James          WIGLEY         Son          4   M                       Bonsall
Bn076f   Mary           WIGLEY         Dau          2   F                       Bonsall
Bn076g   Fanny          WIGLEY         Dau          1   F                       Bonsall
Bn076h   Henry          WIGLEY         Brother      50  M   Miller              Bonsall

Bonsall is only a short distance from Wirksworth.
I do know he had a strong Derbyshire accent, 1881 Census the enumerator has written
Wirksworth just as John would have said it Woks  Woth.
Good Luck

Hi Spendlove, the 1871 could be him. I have looked at the Wirksworth sit and found this family before. And i notice to he is not on the 1871 for this area so the other one could be him ;)  I think the John aged 2 on the 1851 is him though .The family names are very simalar and other records i have point to him born around 1849 I think the 1881 census is a mistaken transcription. Maybe it should read 31.I also did a quick tree and possibly got back to 1689 from this site. not proven yet though.
thanks Michael.
ps this also may account for his marriage to another farm servent too
