I came across this chat now in August 2022. Alfred Ernest Bedingham and Ruth (Line) then Bedingham then Morton were my grandparents. They emigrated to South West Africa and then later to South Africa. My father Geoffrey Alfred Bedingham son of Alfred and Ruth was born in Windhoek in 1926. I am one of 3 sons of Geoffrey and Lavinia Bedingham.
Alfred Ernest Bedingham was a Commissioner of Oaths in South West Africa in 1917, but unsure when they arrived there. Alfred Ernest married Ruth Line in Cape Town 21 January 1924.

Hello Austenb welcome to Rootschat.

I love how the power of the internet can bring these stories back after so long. I hope our posts added some info for you if you didn't know them already ;D

I've been having a look as records available have grown since the post began in 2007.

There is a medal roll for Alfred E Bedingham for 1899-1902 South Africa. A couple of listings as a passenger first an arrival in May 1907 on-board Kinsfaun Castle arriving from Cape Town Mr A E Bedingham age 26 police.
Also a departure for A E Bedingham in 1907 . Kinsfaun Castle On 5 th October bound for The Cape.
Both of those dates would account for missing 1901/1911 census.
Did he stay after the Boer war?
If you would like anymore info on his half siblings let us know.

Hi Tazzie

Thanks very much.
Its extremely interesting when you start to find bits of information about past family, but at the same time its a nightmare finding the right place to look for a newbie.
Do you have the links for the information you listed regarding medal roll and the Mail ship voyages?

Alfred E Bedingham died 26 March 1951 in Durban South Africa.

Hi.

I found some details on Ancestry.

In UK Military Campaign Medal and Award Roll 1793-1949

 Alfred E Bedingham
 Service date 1899-1902
Service place South Africa
Campaign second Boer War
Regiment or unit name SAC Northern Transvaal
Regiment no. 226.

The immigration and emigration records are there as well.

 Hi

I have found Alfred in 1901 listed at home with mum now Emma Rivett.
He may have been overseas and my just added him or he was at home at that point. He was entitled to the 1901 & 1902 clasp.
