Help please finding Edward Clifford's dad... COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 24 November 07 16:57 GMT (UK) »
Now I've found my Gtx4 Grandmother's father (Charles Rossi) with lots of help from the brilliant RootsChatters, I'd like to try and find her husband's father!

I know quite a bit about my Gtx4 Grandfather - Edward Clifford, born approx 1797 in St Georges, Hannover Square, London. Married Sarah Rossi. He died in 1882.  I have him in all the censuses up 'til his death.

An uncle once told me that Edward's father's name was  Charles Edward (this was also Edward's son's name, so maybe he'd got muddled....!) - but as this uncle has gone to sit on his branch of the great family tree in the sky, I can't ask him how he knew!

He also said that Edward had a brother, John - and I have found a John Clifford (born 1798 in St George, London) who would seem to fit the bill - I have him in all the censuses except 1861 where I cannot find him or any of his family. In 1851 they were living in Westminster, Palace Street.  He was married to Martha something.  He died before 1871, as he is not in that census and Martha is given as "Widow".  (As I have a copy of Edward's will, I know he did indeed have a brother, as he is mentioned, but no name given).

I have had a hunt around, to see if I can find Edward and John's father, but cannot find anything.......so would be very grateful for any help.

Many thanks for any ideas

Tilly

Found the following marriage on Boyds index, don't know if it would fit the time frame.

1831/  CLIFFORD  JN/  SHEPARD  MARTH / WESTMINSTER (ST GEORGE HANOVER SQUARE)

I see in the 1841 census, there are Shepherds living next door to John and Martha Clifford. (Richard and Elizabeth)

Hello Sue and Anna

Thank you so much for your help!  The info you gave would seem to fit, I have printed it off and will settle down and have a good look this afternoon (rotten weather here!).

The 1786 marriage is interesting - as Edward was born in 1797, this could be his parents.  I suppose that what I really need to find is Edward's birth/Christening with his parents' names mentioned............I'll have another bash at IGI!

Many thanks again

Hello Sue

Have had a quick look at IGI and found the marriage between Charles Clifford and Eleanor Arundell - this Charles Clifford is Lord Clifford, one of the Cliffords of Chudleigh - so I don't think he's the one!  ;D

ALTHOUGH - the same uncle who told me about Edward's brother John, also swore that our Clifford family was somehow related to the Cliffords of Chudleigh - his proof being that one of his Aunts had spoons and another silver thing with their family crest on...... However, this always seemed a bit far-fetched to me! (This uncle was, however, also right about the Rossi sculptor........).

(I've just seen that this Charles Clifford had a son Charles in 1789, so I'm pretty sure he isn't my ancestor - shame! )

I shall keep looking for another Charles (although Edward's father could have been called something else.....) - what a knot  ::)??? ???

A question - how do I go about consulting Boyds list?

On Pallots marriage index.

Richard Shepherd
Eliz. Marsh

1786 - St. Anne, Soho

I like this marriage which Suffolk Sue found - especially as John Clifford gave his first son a middle name Richard and then went on to have a daughter Elizabeth...
