Dear Casalguidi
Thank you for the further information. Our direct tie up is with the Samuel Crapnell who married Mary Gilbert. He is my wifes gggg grandfather, through his son Samuel by his first wife Jane Sawyer.
Samuel and Mary had 6 children all baptised in Hythe:
1. James 20/1/1801. He married twice, had some 6 children and was still alive in 1881, shown on the census living at Saltwood, Kent with his second wife Jane. They both died at Elham, she in 1887, he in 1888.
2. Christian 3/10/1802. No more known
3. Edward Barnard 20/4/1806. He married Jane Skinner of Orlestone, Kent and they had 3 children, Mary, George Edward and Catherine. He died in 1879 aged 73 and Jane died in 1883 aged 79, both at Dover.
4. Elizabeth 27/3/1808. She married George Hider, a tailor of Dover, in 1828.
5. Martha 6/10/1816. We had no further info on her but she may well be the Martha you had marrying John Hyham, making your assumption correct that the Edward Crapnell witness was her brother.
6. Esther 14/11/1819.
Note that the bulk of this information has been given to us by another researcher who is also descended from Samuel and we have not been able to check all the primary sources ourselves. However, we have no reason to doubt the accuracy.
We do not have any possible candidates for Ann C, nor have we come across Philpott/Ifield names in our searches. Perhaps they were just mates from the pub!!
Many thanks again. If we dig up any more that might interest you we will post it.
Regards
Jackie and Derek
