Hi Derek

I don't have anything from the 1841 census for CRAPNELL in Hythe but there is an 1851 ref plus some baptisms/marriages/burials on here:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gypsy/

Let me know if there is anything of interest because I may have further notes ............ if I can find them :D

I think that I just noted them because a marriage for one of our family was witnessed by a CRAPNELL in Hythe but didn't/haven't yet found any connection with the name.

There weren't many of them in Hythe records but I can't promise that I noted all that I found - depends when I became interested in the name and what I had already searched prior to that date. :-\

Best wishes

Thank you very much for the links. They have given us a few new names. We know our own direct line but are trying to build up a complete picture of the Hythe/Dover Crapnells, so would be interested in anything you may come across in your notes.

Thanks again
Derek and Jackie

Hi Derek & Jackie

Samuel CRAPNELL widower married Mary GILBERT spinster 7 Apr 1801 at Hythe.

Edward CRAPNELL witnessed the marriage of Charles PHILPOTT and Mary IFIELD (aka HIGHFIELD) at Hythe 20 Oct 1828.  This couple are my husband's ancestors and I was trying to find out the connection (if any) to Edward CRAPNELL the witness.  No connection found to date.

Martha CRAPNELL (father Samuel) married John HYHAM at Hythe 1847.  Witnesses Edward CRAPNELL & Ann C (I assume that "C" was my shorthand for CRAPNELL - it was a long time ago!)

From this, I assume that Edward is a probable brother/uncle to Martha.  Do you know anything about Edward ie. could his wife be related to the PHILPOTT/IFIELD family mentioned above?

Emily Caroline dau of James and Jane CRAPNELL of Hythe, labourer baptised Hythe 25 Jun 1854.

The other refs. are probably in the depths of beyond somewhere but will post when/if I come across them :-\

Are these not your direct family then?

Dear Casalguidi
Thank you for the further information. Our direct tie up is with the Samuel Crapnell who married Mary Gilbert. He is my wifes gggg grandfather, through his son Samuel by his first wife Jane Sawyer.
Samuel and Mary had 6 children all baptised in Hythe:
1. James 20/1/1801. He married twice, had some 6 children and was still alive in 1881, shown on the census living at Saltwood, Kent with his second wife Jane. They both died at Elham, she in 1887, he in 1888.
2. Christian 3/10/1802. No more known
3. Edward Barnard 20/4/1806. He married Jane Skinner of Orlestone, Kent and they had 3 children, Mary, George Edward and Catherine. He died in 1879 aged 73 and Jane died in 1883 aged 79, both at Dover.
4. Elizabeth 27/3/1808. She married George Hider, a tailor of Dover, in 1828.
5. Martha 6/10/1816. We had no further info on her but she may well be the Martha you had marrying John Hyham, making your assumption correct that the Edward Crapnell witness was her brother.
6. Esther 14/11/1819.
Note that the bulk of this information has been given to us by another researcher who is also descended from Samuel and we have not been able to check all the primary sources ourselves. However, we have no reason to doubt the accuracy.
We do not have any possible candidates for Ann C, nor have we come across Philpott/Ifield names in our searches. Perhaps they were just mates from the pub!!

Many thanks again. If we dig up any more that might interest you we will post it.

Regards
Jackie and Derek
