I have mentioned on another thread a Thomas Bishop

Thomas was born about 1811 Ramsbury Wiltshire  he died in the hungerford Reg district in 1888

I have Thomas on all census from 1851 - 1881  and in each he is down as assistant to medial practitioner or similar title and in 1881 assistant to surgeon

Thomas lived all his life in practically the same place Back or Buck lane High Street Ramsbury.

We would like to know more about what or WHO he worked for like would he have had any medical training - apart from on the job experience.
He was definately in this job 37 years  could have been longer but we have been unable to find Thomas on 1841 census

Is anyone able to give us a clue as to where to start.

The other point is his wife - or wives as the case may be - he was married twice both times to elizabeths and both wives were school mistresses - I don't know the size of Ramsbury in fact I don't know anything about it at all - but wondered if there were obvious schools in the area that the wives may have taught in

Can anyone help

Teresa

According to Genuki, the population of Ramsbury was 2,290 in 1831, 1,466 in 1951.  It is still not very big now but there are some modern houses.  I would think there would only have been a village school in the 1800s.  The nearest large place is Hungerford, but again according to Genuki the populations was 2,715 in 1831, 3,020 in 1951.

Try looking at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WIL/index.html
for some ideas.
