Mount Gawn, Portglenone parish
« on: Wednesday 28 November 07 16:58 GMT (UK) »
I have an M.I.from Portglenone C.I. graveyard for "William Hilton, Mount Gawn, died 10th March 1896 aged 82 years." Cannot find Mount Gawn in townland lists. Google gives me only racehorses... Can anyone tell me whether "Mount Gawn" is a place name, mountain, house name etc please.

Welcome to Rootschat. What's the exact source for 'Mount Gawn'?

Thank you for the welcome. The source is the Ulster Historical Foundation's gravestone inscription database. The  inscription reads "In memory of William Hilton, Mount Gawn, died 10th March 1896 aged 82 years" and goes on with other family members. I have tried the Ordnance Survey Memoirs no. VIII  Vol 23 which includes Portglenone but my copy is not indexed so I may have missed a reference to "Mount Gawn".

A later reference which proves it must exist: 1910 Portglenone- T.J. Hilton, Mountgawn
www.libraryireland.com/UlsterDirectory1910/Portglenone.php

Doesn't ring any bells but will check a few offline sources later tonight. Meanwhile maybe some else will be able to give a location.

Thanks, that's most helpful. The inscription also refers to a Thomas James Hilton born 1845 died 27th April 1924 who sounds like the T.J.Hilton listed in the 1910 Directory.

Another clue- Londonderry Sentinel, 7 Dec.1866:
December 3, at the Third Presbyterian Church, Portglenone, by the Rev. H. Perry, John Hilton, Hornells Ville, New York, U.S., to Annie, eldest daughter of William Hilton, Mountgawn, Portglenone.

Must be other Hiltons in the area:
1841 Nancy dau. of John Hilton Bracknamuckly married
1842 Jane dau. of Robert Hilton Bracknamackey married
1858 John Hilton Tullynalummon died aged 86
1868 James Hilton Brocknamuckley died (son of John)

Thanks for this additional & interesting information. Yes, there seems to have been a cluster of Hiltons in the parishes of Ahoghill, Grange of Ballyscullion & Craigs - but very few outside this area of Antrim.

Mount Gawn was a big home on what was called the Horseshoe Bend on the Culleybackey Road in Portglenone and it was owned by the Hilton Family.

It was a large home.  During WW 2 the British Soldiers occupied it.

Hope this helps. ;D

Mount Gawn is before the Horseshoe bend.
The road name is now Hiltonstown road and Mount Gawn is situated on the left just prior to the end of the village speed limit
