Parents of Geroge Foster
« on: Friday 30 November 07 19:27 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out who George Foster's parents were.  He is my Great Grandfather.

Apart from very sketchy details of his trial and sentencing, the only other information I have about his early English beginnings comes from his 1827 "Certificate of Freedom".

This document indicates that his "Year of Birth" was 1791, that his "Native Place" was "Tyshurst, Warwickshire".  Seeing that I have not been able to find a town/village in Warwickshire named "Tyshurst", I am assuming that this is an error.

His trial took place at the Berkshire Assizes 10 July, 1820. His sentence 7 Years & Transportation.  He was transported to Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia aboard the "Eliza 2" in 1822.  His "Trade or Calling" is listed as "Plough & Milkman".

I have found evidence that the spelling of Ticehurst in East Sussex was once "Tyshurst".  Seeing that Berkshire is fairly close to Sussex I have further assumed that my George Foster came from somewhere close to Ticehurst, but have not been successful in uncovering any additional evidence of this.

Any and all information/leads/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I thank you for this information.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find any record of George Foster being baptised in Warwickshire around 1791.

Respectfully,

Hi bcra

Against all the odds, the early census returns have survived in the parish chest for Ticehurst in Sussex.

I have checked the 1801, 1811 and 1821 returns for the village, but there is no family with the surname Foster resident at that time - and being born in 1791, George should have been at least on the 1801 census.

Sorry, but I do not think your quest for George is in Ticehurst, Sussex.

Chris,

Thank you very much for looking in the early Ticehurst, Sussex Census returns.  I'm grateful to you.

I do not know where I will search next, but I intend to keep trying.

Take care and be well.
