Richard Spoor 1851 census Newcastle pls
« on: Tuesday 04 December 07 00:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters! I recently obtained a death certificate of a probable relative, but I can't seem to fit him into my tree.  :'(  The death certificate for Richard SPOOR is dated 2 December 1851, stating that Richard died at 7 Claremont Place in the sub-district of St. Andrew in Newcastle at the age of 56. Occupation: Gentleman; cause of death: disease of the heart. The informant is D.D. Main, 13 Elsdon Place in attendance at time of death. This is all I know about Richard Spoor; I am hoping that some keen-eyed Rootschatter can find him in 1851 in Newcastle living with his family. Thank you! Pat

Hello Barbara, Yes, it looks like it could be "my" Richard Spoor in 1841, but the only Spoor with him could be a nephew, perhaps. I suspect he is tied in with my Spoor lot who generally hailed from the Whickham area; however, many migrated into Newcastle to ride the wave of the British Industrial Revolution. I am still hoping he can be found in 1851, but I do thank you for this additional information.  :) Pat

Pat,

Your Man of Mystery...... So Richard died in December 1851. at   7 Claremont Place, Newcastle

Nine months earlier the 1851 census showed the residents of that address ( 2405-468-24) to be William Shield, a publisher and print seller, and his family. No sign of any Spoor !

You wrote that the "informant" D.D. Main lived at 13 Elsdon Place.

On C1851 a David D Main lived at 13 ELDON STREET
(2405-457-3). He was Scotland-born was was "Secretary to the Whittle Dean Water Company"

House numbers 1-9 were Eldon Place, numbers from 10 upwards were Eldon Street ( DD Main and family were still there in C1861 -3818-28-5-, when it was 13 Eldon Place.

You mentioned Spoor roots in Whickham. I noticed Charles Spoor on 1861.. was born Whitburn.. Barbara's info shows the Spoor duo to be in Whitburn on C1841.

That C1841 showed Charles to have been born in Co Durham, but Richard not !

Trivia Angle... you mention folk moving from Whickham to Newcastle to etc... but there were probably many similar opportunities to be had in Whichham area, without the need to cross into Newcastle.

Hello Michael, Thank you so much for the effort in providing extra information on Richard Spoor, the address and the informant. For the time being, he shall apparently remain my mystery man. May I take this opportunity to wish you and yours a happy holiday season.  :)  Pat

hello

richard spoor of whitburn was the mayor of sunderland. He purchased whitburn house from my ancestor william wilkinson in 1834. William was also a gentleman and I can't locate any records for his birth either. You might want to check the marriage bond allegations on family search for some more clues.

Sunderland echo mentions him in an article called village's treasure trove

If you goto google books and serach for a book called

a genealogical and heraldic dictionary of the landed gentry of great britain and ireland, by sir bernard burke, ulster king of arms. you want volume 2 page 1412 on the page SPOOR OF WHITBURN tells you the lineage of the family.

Might help to prove a link. I'm sure if you google search rishard spoor mayor of sunderland you will get lots more information also

Good luck

There are lots of books mentioning richard spoor of whitburn. In 1842 he had a pistol duel with another gentleman in marsden by the name of joseph john wright.

Richard also declined a knighthood.

Hope you can prove a connection

John
