Slingo

Could anyone tell me what happened to a convict who was given a free pardon?  Did they go home or were they sent somewhere else?  My GG grandfather was a convict on the hulk York at Gosport.  He was granted a free pardon in 1846 after serving half his term for stealing a ewe.  He disappears after this.  GRO has been unable to find a death certificate for him in the years between 1846 and 1857. (The latter date is when his wife Jane Javes remarried.)  Any suggestions of where I could look next or any info at all much appreciated.

Hi and thanks for replying.   Unfortunately this is not my Thomas.  Thomas b 1807 was born in Oxforshire and was married to Mary Ann Turner.  He came to Australia with her and his children in the 1850s.  Someone has incorrectly recorded that he was married to Jane Jarves (Jarvis).  My Thomas Slingo never left England.  Jane Jarvis remarried in 1857 to David Cook.  Thomas must have died by this time.  I think it is likely that his name has been spelt incorrectly on his death certificate and also the census for 1851.  This is the case for his son Solomon who is recorded under his mothers maiden name of Javes spelt Jerves and Geves on census entries.
