So we are looking for Andrew CRAIG rather than Jacques?

Michael asked where Andrew was baptised. I presumed he meant Isabella's husband rather than pulling one Jaques out of the list!

I meant the baptism of Andrew Jakes/Jacques.

( I chose that one particularly because it was least common name... then I hoped to turn up baptism and MAYBE pick up a clue to his mother )

Is the target still the birth and family of Elizabeth Wardlaw ?

Today I saw (film of) Tynemouth Parish marriage register for the marriage of Elizabeth WARDLAW and James JAKES, 11 Sept 1813, by Banns, both "of this Parish"

Witesses Joseph BRADFORD and
Thomas Kelley (this one a serial witness... standing in several marriage)

Elizabeth, James and Joseph made their "mark" ( = X ) on the register.

Saw also the Banns entry that declared that the Banns were posted on 22 Aug, 29th Aug and 5 Sep, the married on 11 Sep and " no objections made"

1861 RG9/3846 fol.79 p.33

This census has Elizabeth Jacques [nee Wardlaw] as from Newton by the Sea which is Embleton.  Sorry that is not one I have in my possession for those early years.  She does not appear in the IGI for that parish but that is not necessarily complete.

We seem to gave gone off on several tangents.
Back on track, now.

So, it looks as though we've got a lady of Scottish descent in Elizabeth Wardlaw, who originated from Newton by the Sea, met Andrew Jakes, who was christened in Chester le Street, in Co, Durham, married him in Tynemouth and their children were  Christened in Longbenton,

Andrew Jackes was christened on 22. 7. 1827 at Longbenton.

Thanks for continued interest and support.

Liz,

Can you cope with another tangent ?

A Wardlaw "footprint" in Newton, but maybe not the right one !

-----------------------------------------------

Newton-by-the-Sea lay within the territory of the Parish of Embleton.

Abbreviated Baptism, Marriage and Burial transcriptions of the Embleton parish records , 1754-1812 hold only two Wardlaw entries.

1) Baptism 6 Jan 1796, Robert, son of James and Isabella Wardlaw of Newton.

Unfortunately the second entry is...
Burial , 7 Jan 1796, Robert, son of James Wardlaw of Newton.

No other Wardlaw record in the 1754-1812 era in Embleton parish records.

Oh, my, Michael. The more I research, the more I find these tragedies. I don't know how on earth families coped with losing babies.
So . . . . . . perhaps, maybe, possibly, James and Isabella were Elizabeth's parents.
Would a girl be less likely to have been recorded in those days?
Or maybe she was born somewhere else.
I suppose we will all hit 'dead ends' where we can not fathom out which way to go.
Strange, not far from Embleton, I was going down for the third time, caught in the current as a teenager, and was yanked to safety by a tall blond German, fellow Youth Hosteller at Rock Youth Hostel.
I'm having fun with Elizabeth's husband, James's forbears, too, trying to sort out which Twizzell is which, but that's another story.
Cheers!
