Ballarat -Eureka Stockade Anniversary and Ex POW Memorial
« on: Monday 10 December 07 12:23 GMT (UK) »
As I've mentioned in posts before, OH's g-g-grandfather James Beattie was at the Eureka Stockade.

We were in Ballarat last weekend for the 153rd Anniversary and I thought I would post some of the photos I took there.

The pictures above are of the Eureka Stockade Memorial.

This is the plaque honouring the diggers and soldiers who died, and the last one is of the Eureka Centre.

The Eureka flag is on display, but is kept in very low light, so of course it can't be photographed.

I saw it for the first time, and it just blew me away - I won't need any photos to remember it.

The following photos are of the Ex - POW memorial in Ballarat.
There are over 35,000 names on the granite wall to the left of the photos.

I haven't been able to find a list of names on the net, but I did find this contact info:
Liz Heagney, Secretary, Ex-POW Memorial Committee

In the middle of the wall are obelisks engraved with the names of countries where POW's were held.  They are intended to be surrounded by water, but water restrictions prevent this.

Thanks for posting that Sula.
I am from Ballarat, but it's been awhile since I have been there, living in WA now.

My Great Uncle, Ken Richmiller, is on the POW memorial. He died as a Prisoner of the Japanese at Sandakan in Borneo. I think it's a really nice memorial.

Thank you very much Sula  for  posting  those pictures up for everyone to see.

Australia is  such a big country and  many of  us may  never get the chance to visit Ballarat.  It is on  our  retirment journey plan though.  However your lovely  photos are very  moving and a joy  to  look at.

My dad's cousin name is on  there  as a POW   Alfred Shoebridge,  he was a prisoner of  the Japs at Changi cptured as a rather young chap   he  lived  only  till he was 50, he never really  recovered.  The  momument  is quite something.

kind regards Jenn
