Hi Edwin,

It looks like Cuckwool or Cuckwod to me?

Have you checked her birthplace on any other census?

Regards,

Pels  :)

Hmmm...I don't know.  It looks like Cuckwool or Cuckwod/Cuckwood to me, but I can't find any of those in Yorkshire.  (To assist others who may wish to look, the surname is actually GLEDHILL and the folio number is 99).

In 1851 she gives a different Yorkshire birthplace which looks like Newboy or Newbry - again rather mystifying. (HO107/2319 folio 642 p38)

I can't easily find her in 1871 - had she died by then?

Many thanks for help so far.
Jane died Mar Qtr of 1871 so that was just before 1871 census took place

I know this isn't what the enumerator has written, but there is a place called Coxwold near Thirsk,  and a place called Newburgh Grange not far from there.

Now that is very good as i suppose our accents got in the way of pronouncing the correct name
I have just come across a Newby Wiske as well.  I was expecting the name to be in the Leeds area as not only did Husband Henry Gledhill come from there but so were his children born there.
