I've been trying to join Alexander on to my Benthams, also in the Mawdesley area, (some only a couple of census sheets away) but without success. His parents seem very elusive! None of the most likely churches have any Alexander Benthams mentioned at all. I wonder if the parents were religious non-conformists, as well as in their choice of names?

He seems quite insistent in giving his place of birth as Chorley, but of course he may just have been brought up there and the baptism we seek is elsewhere. The exception is 1861, when he claims to come from Parbold.

I know that Alexander was buried at St James the Great, Wrightington on 20 Mar 1877, aged 77 years.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Hi Andrew, Have  found his siblings. Have you seen the record of his marriage to Ellen Hickam in Wigan 1820. I have been told by a cousin in Leeds that some of the family around the time of his birth were Roman Catholics.
My connection to Alexander is through his son William who was my GGGrandfather who married Margery Forshaw 1848.
Are you a relative of mine?.

                                     Bertram
