George Sayer
« on: Monday 17 December 07 10:13 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a George Sayer, born in Eastry Workhouse in May 1843, his mother was Elizabeth Sayer, no father named on the Birth Cert. This is my brick wall, I would like to find out if poss who his father was.  I dont know if Elizabeth was married, single or if Sayer is her married name or maiden name, I hve lots of info on his later life, first showing on a census is 1871 in Deal where he is married with children.  I am new to this Rootschat thing and having difficulty finding my way around, so if I have not psoted correctly, please excuse any mistakes!!

Hi Paul and welcome to Rootschat!

Hopefully your brickwall will not remain standing for long  ;D

Have you tried searching http://www.a2a.org.uk/ to find if there is a warrant for putative father or settlement certificate?

Thanks for your prompt reply, I did look on that site a few years ago, maybe it will be worth another look.  Thanks for the tip.

Welcome to Rootschat Paula.

One other avenue is to try to look at the baptism record for George in case it mentions a father.

I think that 1841 census record looks a good possibility Kerry.  I have been looking for a marriage for Elizabeth and have tried to locate George and Elizabeth in the 1851 and 1861 censuses but have had no luck so far.  It is quite likely that George is lurking under an incorrect surname.

Will have another go a bit later.

Good thinking Barbara

Presumably he would have been baptised at the Workhouse??  :-\

I tried searching for 1851 and 1861 too but no luck which kind of suggests to me that Elizabeth married before 1851?

I'm assuming this is the right marriage:
George Sayer/Eliza Edwards in Sep 1863 (Thanet 2a 1090) shortly after the birth of their eldest daughter Elizabeth Sarah Sayer (although it is unusual that she is listed as Sayer). The certificate may give George's father's name (but it may be made up even if it is there).

In 1861 Eliza Edwards, 15, is living with her sister, stepfather and mother (RG9/538).
Nearby is a Geor Sayer, 16 (or possibly 14), staying as a visitor. His birthplace is given as London, Kent, but he may be a possibility.

Hello Kerry
Yes, I think she may have married before 1851 but I cannot find a likely match in the censuses.  George might have been raised by a family member of course but nothing is looking hopeful even searching for George born Eastry or Sandwich 1843+/- 2years.  ???
I cannot see a baptism on the IGI but the coverage is not very good for that area. I think a search in the PRs is needed - starting with the workhouse.
The workhouse admission and discharge registers might also be useful.
I think George is a Railway employee in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.  This might give a clue as to his whereabouts in the earlier censuses - perhaps stepfather was a Railwayman?

Hi Barbara

If only we could find George on the 1851 or 1861  :-\

I'll keep searching and thinking!
