Stephen Butcher Drake
« on: Tuesday 18 December 07 20:17 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for anything I can find on my ggrandfather . His name was Stephen butcher Drake and his wifes name was Jemima Neeves. I would like to know how many children they had and their birthdates. I have no access to the census, i live in canada. He was born abt 1850. To give you a bit more to go on, I know his fathers name was John Drake, and that at one time he was the proprietor and liscensee of the pavilion hotel on custom house quay on the dover seafront. In 1875 Stephen married jemima. He died in kent in mar 1910, and a year later before june 1 1911, they had come to brantford ontario to live with relatives, but i dont know how they were related.I would like to have earlier census records on him to get a better idea of who he was, but also to get any info on John drake I can, especially any siblings, and who John Drake was married to. can anyone help me??

www.automatedgenealogy.com shows them on the 1911 census - it looks like John the son of Stephen and Jemima came first, in 1910, with wife Ellen and children Cyril and Fanny, and then Jemima, Hilda, and Albert came in 1911.

The ones who have disappeared before the 1911 Canadian are (using freebmd)
Lilian = Lilian Elizabeth M, b. 1883  May have married 1909, to Joseph William Buckley (birth Eric J. Buckley, Dover, 1920, mmn Drake)
Mabel = Mabel Edith M, b. 1880 May have married 1906 to William Byrne (birth Leonard S Byrne b. 1913 Dover, mmn Drake)
Alice = Alice Maud(e) b. 1876 may have married 1896 to John Baxter or Herbert Edward Virgo
William Henry S. b. 1888 - may have married Winifred E Lewis in 1915 in Cheltenham - several possible children b. in Dover and elsewhere.
Charles Ernest b. 1879 m. 1906 to Beatrice Maude Hall or Kate Doble

freebmd also shows Stephen Butcher Drake m. Jemima Mercy Neeves, 1875, and Jemima's birth in 1852.

Those who went to Canada you should be able to see on ship lists at :

Pavillion ?????
John T Drake head M 45 mariner Chatham kent
Elisabeth wife 39 Folkstone
Mary Majer S daughter U 18 Dover
John T son 16 Dover
Stephen B son 12 Dover
Elisabeth J E (transcribed as Charlotte)daughter 8  Dover
Thomas Robinson Visitor U 28 Oldham lancs
RG9 349 7 8

This is possibly daughter mary's birth reg
Mary Major Susannah Drake
mar qtr 1843 Dover
5 129

I think this is a possiblity for John's marriage

DEc qtr 1838
Dover
on same page
John Thomas Drake
Elizabeth major Rayner
5 194

IGI (extracted)
marriage
Elizabeth major Rayner
John Thomas Drake

so in 1851 possibly mary Wood (maried to William) was the mother of either elizabeth or John -and had remarried to William????????

There is also this Christening
IGI (extracted)
22 July 1818 Flokstone Kent
Elizabeth major rayner

Just to bring in the 1871   RG10/1010/8/9  Custom House Quay, Pavillion Inn

J T Drake  mar  50  lic vict. b. Chatham
E  Drake  wife 45 b. Folkestone
E J E Drake dau 18 b. Dover
S E M Robinson dau 6 b. Dover
John Drake son unm 25 Mariner
Thomas E..y  apprentice 17 mariner b. Canterbury
Sarah Marsh serv 16 gen. servant domestic b. Folkestone
John Marsh 18 apprentice  mariner

E J E Drake is Elizabeth Jane Emily Drake  1852 Dec qtr - Dover 2a 618
S E M Robinson is Sarah Elizabeth Major Robinson b. 1865 Mar qtr - registered Dover 2a 825. Could she be a granddaughter rather than daughter?

I think this ties in nicely with the marriage of John Thomas Drake and Elizabeth Major Rayner.

Well done fairlane.

Wonder if Thomas Robinson (visitor in 1861) is Sarah Elizabeth major Robinson's father?
