1901 census help please Sussex area.
« on: Thursday 29 November 07 22:06 GMT (UK) »
As per usual , the 1901 census online that I have bought credits with, still continues to frustrate. Keeps coming up no match. Its like hitting a brick wall! I am trying to trace the Baker family (yes I know its a common name) Louise Baker was born in Rye Sussex in 1898. She had a sister (name unknown) mother (name unknown)Her father was William Baker a fruiterer. At one stage they moved to Brighton. There are 3 William Bakers listed in Brighton but none seem to fit the profile. I suspect that William died early, say 1900 (?)  All help appreciated. Just as a point of interest, one ancestry site shows her birth record, yet another one doesnt have her in their record . Very odd! :D

Hi Silverdream
If William died young(ish) his wife may have remarried by1901.It was quite common
to give the younger children of a previous marriage the surname of the new
husband.Have you searched the full indexes for louisa's birth?
This will give mothers name, you can then search for a marriage 1898-1901.
Hope this helps
Jim (if not,come back)

It is a possibility she could have married again .Its not something I thought about because on Louise"s marriage certificate it does list her father as William . I would have expected if that wasnt the case, the real father would be named. I will try and explore more. her family never knew William and both girls have the same surname."Ma" B :)aker was still alive in Brighton in 1947, dont know when she died. Thank you for trying to help.

I would still like to know why the site I am registered with says there is no record of Louise Baker in the 1901 census. There must be an entry, its ridiculous!

Hi
I would have thought your best bet was to get the birth certificate.  That will give an address and her mother's name which will make a search on the 1901 much easier.   Transcriptions of the 1901 vary so sites may have mistranscribed her.   Searching for just Louise without surname or just Baker may show her.  There are several Louise/Louisa Bakers of the right age in Sussex in 1901 so the birth place is very important.  How do you know she was born in Chichester?   If you are looking at FreeBMD sites then they are not full coverage.  You must check the full GRO index to find her birth record.
Who were the witnesses at Louise's marriage?  They are often relatives.
It is, of course, always possible that she was illegitimate and made up a father on the marriage certificate.   I would also look for the death of her mother and then the marriage to make sure you have your facts right.

Just thought of another avenue.  Who did Louise marry and when and where did she die?   Her death index entry should give her date of birth.  That means you can narrow down the birth entries.  Always assuming that whoever registered her death knew her correct date of birth.  I have looked at the full index and cannot see a Louise/a Baker born in Chichetser area in 1898.  Of course, she may be registered with Louise as a second name and always used that rather than her first name.   Are you assuming 1898 from her age at marriage or do you have other proof?
Sorry for all these questions but the more info the better.

First of all, Louise herself had 6 children, most deceased however her daughter told me it was  a Chichester birth . However the family cant remember anything!!Secondly I found her birth on one of the sites. I know the so called free BMDs only list a a limited number of dates. Took me months to work that out.!
With research I always opt for the marriage certificate as I find that really has the most information and I have Louise"s marriage certificate. She married Godfrey Harold Verrall in Feb. 1921 in Rye, in a Registry Office. It may be I have forgotten, her birth could have been Rye, its all the same area.I always search the people who were a witness, that does tell you a lot. However, the two on her certificate are unreadable. One was a Henry, the other was definately William and the surname. looks like Tickmott, who Knows? Her father is listed as "deceased" , never thought she might be illegitimate. Always a possibilty.

I tried the 1881 census and once again my research site says no match.Tried various spellings too.Sadly her daughters husband is seriously ill and Louise was living with her at the time of her death, she lived well into her nineties. So I am reluctant to ring her in the UK and ask for the date. I think she might have been 94/6
