« on: Wednesday 19 December 07 17:11 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please help to find my Thompsons in 1871
Bit odd as 1901 father is James, 1891 & 1881 he's Michael, 1851 & 61 James, so could be under either. son Ralph's b. cert 1878 gives father as Michael, daughter Mary E's in 1881 as James

 :(

Have tried most variations -  cannot even find a George with parents of a similar name combination.

Very frustrating.  Can't have all been out of house when the census was written??

Sorry not to be able to help further.

Hi Joy and all

The Micheal Thompson in your above post is not the one Barbara is looking for as the one in your post is also on the 1881 cencus.

Ive also been looking for hours and cant see any of them

Thanks so much to all of you for having a go   ;D ;D  I'm very grateful

I left this family on the back burner for a while, perhaps I should have left it there, but the mystery James/Michael is my OH's gt.grandfather and I would love to finish him off, as it were.

The 1871 gap is annoying, as I think I've got them in 1861 & 51, when he is James again, but 1841 there is a Michael and a James both born Garmondsway Moor, so I just thought if I sorted 1871......

Thought it would be easy to find George aged abt 5, and they seem to have stayed in Durham, must be mis-indexed or mistranscribed.

Please keep looking, I'm sure one of you will find them !!

Have just had a thought, surprising how that happens when someone is helping, there's a bit of a gap between sons George & William, wonder if it was a 2nd marriage for one of their parents?

I haven't found the right marriage yet, 2 years ago I sent for the 1864 cert for a Michael Thompson & Mary Watson, but he's a platelayer and the marriage is in Sedgefield, which is where William was born, but it doesn't fit with George.  There's a possible marriage 1864 for James Thompson to Mary Jane Lumley in Stockton (where I think Geo was born) so may send for that next. (although with Watson as maiden name on 2 birth certs...am I grasping at straws?)

The Michael/James Thom* name change is really puzzling me .. only one birth for a Michael Thompson during the correct period ..

Birth, Dec qtr, 1839
Michael Thompson
Stockton, Vol 24,  Page 195

Which would fit in with the Garmondsway Moor birthplace?

Barbara - I'm sure you have already seen these .. just let me concentrate on Michael because there aren't that many .. but James is more of a problem .. ..

He can't have just picked the name out of a hat?  :D
