Could Penrith's Son 'Bentick' could be Bennett
« on: Saturday 22 December 07 22:37 GMT (UK) »
William Carter (from Suffolk) married Elizabeth (Betsy) Porrith (or Penrith, or Porrich) in 1833
Their third child was named John Bendick (b 1847)
Was Bendick a family name?
The family moved form Penrith to Newcastle. On researching the children of John's brother James, who married Elizabeth Ann Summerville,I found they had several children including a daughter Elizabeth Bennett Carter (b1897) and a son Henry Bennett Carter (b1891)
Is Bentick a mistranscribed Bennett?
Any ideas?

I would suspect that it is more likely to be Bentick or similar spelling since there are two places where he is named - the birth index gives John Bantick and the 1851 census gives John Bentinck, seems to me to be unlikely to be Bennett.

Have you seen the extracted entry on the IGI for the christening of just plain John Carter  22 August 1847      Saint Andrew, Penrith, Cumberland, parents William and Elizabeth.

A mod might consider this post to be better suited to the Cumberland board than the Northumberland one.  The marriage also took place in Penrith, Cumberland as was the census.

Thanks to Mary and Richard.
Helpful hint, please - how did you trace John to Greenwich, Richard?

I found the marriage and then, since it seemed a long way from 'home', thought I ought to check the census.

It was Robert Carter who married Elizabeth Ann Summerville.

I think the 1901 census entry for Bennett is a mistranscription for Penrith. That surname would make more sense.

Henry Penrith Carter        Jun 1891   Newcastle T
Elizabeth Penrith Carter   Mar 1897  Newcastle T

Absolutely right, Richard. It was Robert and Elizabeth Ann (nee Summerville) Carter ( living in Newcastle) who named two of their children Elizabeth Bennett Carter and Henry Bennett Carter, and another two, Ann Summerville Carter and Alice Summerville Carter. The Summerville makes sense. I wondered where the Bennett came from.
Interestingly, their son Robert married Mary, who was from Cumberland, so the Carters could have still kept contact with people in the NE.
As far as Betsy Carter (William's wife) b Penrith 1813, her name seems to have been spelt as Penrith, Porrith, and Penrich.
Could be that it's Bentick/ Bendick.

As my earlier post says, I don't think the name is Bennett; I think it is Penrith.
The birth entries for the two children both say Penrith (see above) - the enumerator got it wrong (quite common): there are no Bennetts.
