MAURICE FOLEY - DURRUS, CORK
« on: Monday 03 January 05 06:02 GMT (UK) »
Searching for Maurice Foley, born c1861, Durrus, Cork the son of Maurice Foley and Maria Linnehanne.

He married Bridget O'Donnell at Gympie, Queensland, Australia in 1886.

Have tracked him after marriage but have had no success with his Irish origins.

Any suggestions.

Thanks, Irene

Hi,

Do you know his religion? For 1861 you need to look in parish records as general registration didn't start until 1864.

Area:
Townland:
County: Cork
Barony: West Cork
Civil Parish: Durras and Kilcrohane (used for COI parish records)
Registration District: Bantry (used for Census and BMD)
Roman Catholic Parish: Schull West
Roman Catholic Diocese: Cork and Ross

Durrus (Muintervara) has catholic baptisms from 5-May-1820 to 16-Feb-1856 and marriages from 4-Feb-1819 to 30-Sep-1880 on film P4799 in the National Library.

Durrus and Kilcrohane Anglican records were destroyed in the 1922 fire. The baptismal records start only from 1903. The older ones were destroyed. The marriage registers start 1845. And the burial records start 1903 also.

Hi Irene,

I know your original request is going back a bit, but I am also researching Maurice Foley and Maria Linnehanne (I see her name spelled differently in different records)

I believe the below search leads to their issue

https://www.familysearch.org/s/search/index/record-search-advanced#searchType=records&fed=true&collectionId=1584963&advanced=true&givenName=maurice&surname=foley&eventType=any&eventLocation=&eventYearFrom=&eventYearTo=&relationship=spouse&spouseFirst=maire&spouseLast=Linnehanne&filtered=false

There is no Maurice, but by the naming pattern of my family he would have been first born and as the poster above said he would not be in the above records because of when he was born

Maurice the senior (my gg grandfather) was a journeyman baker who eventually moved to Ballydehob after Mary died and lived with David (my g grandfather) also a baker who had set up a business there

you can see him in the 1901 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Ballydehob/Lower_Main_Street/1158988/ took me awhile to find them there as they had confused up the Christian name/Family name enteries

I have no information from before Maurice Foley from Durrus, but family history has the family coming from Kerry.

If you have turned up anything since I would be very keen to hear from you.

Regards

David Foley (I have a older brother Maurice... very unimaginative us Foley's ;) )
