Settlement Papers Name Index LookUp
« on: Saturday 29 December 07 08:23 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor, Richard Blackman, died aged 64 years in the Henley Workhouse, Oxfordshire in 1849. I've hit a brickwall in my research on him. He was married to Anne Heffernon/Effernon who was born  in Ireland and their children were Solomon born c1841, William born c1844, John born c1847. Richard was an ex-soldier. By 1851 Anne along with her children were  living in Hambleton Buckinghamshire and Anne is recorded as a pauper at that time. I can find no record of a marriage between Richard and Anne. All the children were born in Hambleton, Buckinghamshire.  I don't know where Richard was born. Its a long shot but if settlement papers exist for Oxfordshire and there is a name index would someone kindly check that index for a record of Richard Blackman or his family. Any information would be  greatly appreciated. I'm quickly running out of ideas about what other records to check to obtain more information about Richard Blackman, in particular his place of birth.

Thanks
Lizzie

Hi Lizzie ...

Just a few thoughts on your message.

As you say, there seems to be no record of Richard and Anne's marriage on FreeBMD.  However, I note that there are no HEFFERNON marriages at all recorded before the mid 1840s (and it's even later before any EFFERNON marriages appear).

Have you found Richard and Anne on the 1841 census?  I have had a try, but without success.  Again, however, the only BLACKMANs recorded on the 1841 in Buckinghamshire were born in Burnham and Medmenham - perhaps it's worth searching in these two parishes for Richard?

Bearing in mind both of the above comments, have you considered that Richard (possibly moving around as a soldier) and Anne may have married in Ireland (and for whatever reason then returned to Bucks. where their children were born)?

PS It may be worth trying to get an actual DOB for Solomon - if it was after the date of the census, then that would lend strength to them being out of the country at that time!
