Thomas Stoner born about 1806
« on: Saturday 29 December 07 14:26 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for the marriage of Thomas Stoner and am confused.

I have found the marriage for Thomas Stoner to Harriet Hole on the familysearch site

03.02.1839 St Nicholas Brighton Sussex

This fits in with the 1841 census details HO107 1061/4 folio 29 page 2

Thomas Stoner & Harriet Stoner both aged 35 years, with 3 sons.

I then have found no Harriet Stoner in the 1851 census. ONLY

HO107 1566 folio 231 page?

Thomas Stoner born Sussex age 47 & Caroline Stoner age 44 born Brighton

In both censuses, Thomas Stoner was a Carpenter.

Is this the same Thomas Stoner ??? If yes, then when did Harriet Hole die ???
When did Thomas & Caroline ??? marry & what was her maiden name ???

The GRO ref for his first marriage is
March Qu 1839 Brighton 7/345  if you wanted to order the certificate

1861 census has Thomas & Caroline both aged 57, he born Cowfold, she Brighton - details if you don't already have them

Still looking for their marriage....

Hello, Muffin,

There are three possible deaths in the complete ONS indexes for a Harriet Stoner in Sussex 1841-1851

Mar ¼ 1845  Steyning  7  354
Dec ¼ 1846  Horsham  7 300
Dec ¼ 1850  Cuckfield  7 247

There were three possible marriages for a Thomas Stoner in Sussex  1845 - 1851

Two of these showed the spouse's name not as Caroline, but the following one which took place in Steyning unfortunately did not show a spouse's name, so it is possible it links up with the death in the Steyning Reg district for Harriet.

Marriage
Thomas Stoner
Mar ¼ 1846  Steyning  7 575

If you wish to take the chance that this could be the right marriage & order the certificate this can be done online, & there is a facility to enter a reference that can be checked, so if the info on the cert does not agree with your details, the cert will not be issued & you will be give a partial refund of the cost.

good luck    :)

Well done Meliora, I'll stop looking!

Muffin, you may be able to phone Worthing register office and get the cert from them, asking them to confirm details before you buy:

Worthing Register Office
Centenary House
Durrington Lane
Worthing
BN13 2QB
Tel:01243 642122

If not the correct office they would be able to tell you where the Steyning marriage records are held

There is one small problem with ordering marriage certs from a Register Office in that you have to know the name of the church.    Birth & deaths are OK but you can only give the Office the info that, whatever the event,  it took place within a certain quarter of the year as the ONS refs are of no use.  This still leaves a certain amount of searching, & with a marriage there can be any amount of churches in a given district.  This may be OK if it states, for instance, the Parish Church of a district.    If the request means that several churches have to be looked at they may levy a search fee.

Anyway, good luck,

Meliora

I'm sure they're all different, but the ones I've dealt with have been most helpful with only the year and names as information  (particularly our North East offices, I must say!!)  Worth a try at least, as the GRO is much more expensive, £3 to check info I think, plus the cert cost.

Good luck anyway, and do let us know how you get on, and if we can be of any more help
