Boar War.....Fred Brook
« on: Tuesday 01 January 08 15:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

Now this is unchartered territory for me and although ive been here 4 years I wasnt sure where to but this request so if it needs moving just move it  ;D

Im trying to find out whether this guy was in the Boar War possibly the Hussars.

Fred Brook b 1863 in Honley-Huddersfield the son of James and Sarah Ann Brook...at the time he registered(if he did that is) he would have been living in Holmfirth-Huddersfield.

So could someone please see if they can see him or point me towards any Boar War records that I can search myself

Thanks very much

Jane

Hope you all had a good christmas and have a happy and peaceful new year

Hi Jane

I have a Boer War medal roll for the cavalry and F Brook/Brooke is not listed. I think I have found him in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census and in each he is involved in the wool trade, so I do not see how he would have had time to serve.

You could check for his service papers in WO97 at Kew. They are in alphabetical order, so you do not have to know his regiment. These surviving papers are original documents and you will have to visit or employ a researcher.

Hi Jane

There were 2 Boer Wars  -  1880-1881 (a.k.a. Transvaal War) and Oct. 1899-1902 (a.k.a. South African War).

Just google " British regiments in Boer war" and you'll find masses of info. You can also try www.regiments.org.uk

However, all this will just help you find which regiments went to the war, and there were lots.  I think the onlly way to find a particular person is via the records Ken has recommended.

You could try this site..................

http://www.casus-belli.co.uk/index.asp?PageId=1

it is under deveolopment and the 'Register' is about 40% complete. Apparently it favours Colonial soldiers at the moment.
